NIGERIA (Agency Report) — 28 March 2026 — The Nigerian Forest Security Service (NFSS) has inaugurated a specialised Counter-Terrorism Unit to tackle rural banditry and kidnapping.
Speaking at the launch in Abuja, Commander-General Dr Joshua Osatimehin stressed the need for collaboration with conventional security agencies to strengthen national security. He said the unit would boost intelligence gathering and bridge gaps in community-based security, particularly in forested areas.
Osatimehin noted that NFSS operations now cover all 36 states, the FCT, and local government areas, providing grassroots intelligence to support national efforts. He urged personnel to work closely with the police, military, and civil defence, describing synergy as vital to stability.
Commander of the Counter-Terrorism Department, Mr Innocent Solomon, hailed the inauguration as a milestone in NFSS’s mandate. He said the department would identify, disrupt, and neutralise threats while protecting citizens and infrastructure, leveraging intelligence sharing, technology, and partnerships.
Director of Operations, Dr Muhammad Abdullahi, called for greater recognition and support for NFSS personnel, many of whom operate under difficult conditions. He emphasised the service’s role in providing critical intelligence and urged communities to share timely information. Abdullahi also highlighted sacrifices made by operatives, including injuries and loss of lives, underscoring the need for institutional backing.
The inauguration was attended by representatives of the police, armed forces, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
