BREAKING: Oyo police dismiss terrorist infiltration claims in Ogbomoso, intensify security operations

IBADAN, Nigeria (NPA) — The Oyo State Police Command has debunked reports circulating on social media alleging the infiltration of suspected Lukarawa terrorists into forests around Ogbomoso and the Old Oyo National Park, describing the claims as false, misleading, and without any factual basis.
The Command said intelligence assessments and security reports available to it do not support claims of any terrorist movement or presence within the affected areas.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the police said preliminary investigations revealed that the video and accompanying voice note being circulated are old materials deliberately recycled and misrepresented to create fear and panic among residents.
“The Command unequivocally rejects and dismisses the claims contained in the said video and voice note as false, misleading, and entirely without factual basis,” the statement said.
According to the police, the circulation of unverified security information has the potential to create unnecessary panic, undermine public confidence, disrupt economic activities, and divert security resources from genuine threats.
Despite dismissing the reports, the Command said it has intensified security measures across Ogbomoso, the Old Oyo National Park axis, and adjoining border communities.
It disclosed that intelligence and covert operatives have been strategically deployed to vulnerable locations to strengthen existing security architecture and enhance early warning mechanisms.
The police added that the operatives are working closely with traditional institutions, community-based intelligence networks, hunters, vigilante groups, and other local stakeholders to improve intelligence gathering and ensure rapid responses to security concerns.
The Command also announced an increase in visibility policing, confidence-building patrols, intelligence-led stop-and-search operations, and strategic deployments across the affected areas.
According to the police, the measures are aimed at reassuring residents, deterring criminal activities, and sustaining the prevailing peace and security in the state.
Residents, particularly those in border communities and rural settlements, were urged to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements, persons, or activities to security agencies.
The Command expressed concern over what it described as the growing trend of fake news, misinformation, and unverified security alerts on social media platforms.
It warned that the deliberate publication and circulation of false security information constitutes criminal offences under existing laws and could attract prosecution.
“The dissemination of false security information is not only irresponsible and unethical but also constitutes a criminal offence punishable under extant laws,” the statement noted.
The police further warned individuals and groups involved in spreading falsehoods capable of causing public alarm or destabilising peace and security to desist immediately.
The Command reassured residents that there is currently no credible intelligence indicating the presence or infiltration of any terrorist group within Oyo State.
urged members of the public to remain calm, continue their lawful activities without fear, and rely only on verified information issued through official channels of the Nigeria Police Force and other recognised security agencies.
The police also reiterated their commitment to maintaining public safety and preserving peace across the state through sustained collaboration with communities and other security stakeholders.
