SPIER DIALOGUE: Africa has no reason to remain poor — Peter Obi

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (NPA) — Presidential aspirant under the umbrella of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Mr Peter Obi, has said Africa possesses enormous human and natural resources that should position the continent among the world’s leading economies, insisting that there is no justification for persistent poverty across Africa.

Obi made the remarks while delivering a guest speech at the Spier Dialogue Event on “Policies for Growth in Africa” in Cape Town, South Africa, after earlier meetings with ministers in the country.

According to him, Africa is richly endowed with huge mineral deposits, more than 60 per cent of the world’s uncultivated arable land, and the youngest population globally, describing the continent’s youthful population as a strategic asset for economic transformation rather than a burden.

The former Anambra State governor, however, blamed Africa’s slow development on poor leadership, corruption, weak institutions, and the high cost of governance.

He urged African leaders to shift attention away from “politics and endless election cycles” toward productivity, development, and nation-building.

Obi stressed that the future of Africa depends largely on aggressive investment in Human Development Index (HDI) indicators such as education, healthcare, and poverty reduction.

He lamented that many African nations still struggle with low life expectancy, rising unemployment, widespread poverty, and high infant mortality rates.

The presidential aspirant also warned that small and medium-scale businesses across the continent were collapsing under harsh economic conditions, poor infrastructure, and inconsistent government policies.

According to him, Africa urgently requires competent leadership with the capacity, compassion, and commitment to prioritise production over consumption and development over politics.

Obi added that strengthening institutions, reducing the cost of governance, combating corruption, and creating an enabling environment for businesses would help Africa become more productive, secure, democratic, and prosperous.

In a statement issued on Friday, Obi described the dialogue as a critical platform focused on the future of Africa and the urgent challenges confronting the continent and the wider global community.

IGP Disu assures tight security ahead of Ekiti governorship election

ABUJA, Nigeria (NPA) — The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has assured residents and political stakeholders of adequate security and professional conduct by security personnel ahead of the forthcoming Ekiti State governorship election.

Disu gave the assurance on Thursday during the Election Stakeholders’ Meeting, and the Signing of the Peace Accord held in Ado-Ekiti ahead of the June 20 governorship poll.

The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the National Peace Committee led by former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar, political parties, candidates, traditional rulers, civil society organisations, security agencies, religious leaders, diplomats, and election observers.

According to a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the IGP commended INEC and the National Peace Committee for promoting peaceful democratic participation and strengthening public confidence in the electoral process.

He also praised Abdulsalami Abubakar for his continued commitment to peace, national unity, and democratic stability in Nigeria.

The police chief reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force, alongside other security agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), to ensuring a peaceful, secure, free, and credible election across Ekiti State.

Disu disclosed that comprehensive deployment plans and operational strategies had already been concluded for all 16 Local Government Areas, 154 wards, and more than 2,400 polling units across the state.

He stated that security personnel and operational assets had been strategically positioned to guarantee the safety of voters, electoral officials, observers, and other participants during the election.

The IGP further assured Nigerians that the Police Force would remain professional, neutral, and impartial throughout the election period, while urging political actors to respect the Peace Accord and avoid actions capable of disrupting the electoral process.

He also encouraged residents of Ekiti State to exercise their constitutional rights without fear, assuring them of adequate security before, during, and after the election.

The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to protecting democratic values, maintaining public order, and ensuring peaceful elections across the country.

  • ADC accuses ICPC of intimidation over denial of access to Nasir El-Rufai

ADC accuses ICPC of intimidation over denial of access to Nasir El-Rufai

ABUJA, Nigeria (NPA) — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) of intimidation and political harassment following the refusal to grant party leaders access to former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who remains in the custody of the anti-graft agency.

In a statement issued on Friday, the opposition party said senior ADC leaders, including National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola and ADC Policy and Manifesto Committee Secretary, Salihu Lukman, visited the ICPC headquarters in Abuja to see El-Rufai but were denied access despite prior communication and formal requests.

The party claimed that while the delegation waited for a response, tension escalated after three truckloads of armed police officers reportedly arrived at the premises.

According to the ADC, the heavy security deployment was unnecessary given that the visiting party officials were unarmed and peaceful.

“It is deeply troubling that a simple request by senior party officials to visit a detained colleague was met, not with professionalism, but with a show of force more suited to the suppression of civil unrest,” the statement said.

The party further alleged that state institutions were increasingly being used as instruments of political pressure and intimidation against opposition voices.

The ADC noted that its National Secretary had earlier written officially to the ICPC Chairman, Musa Adamu Aliyu, requesting visitation rights for El-Rufai amid concerns over his wellbeing and alleged restrictions on access to family members and medical personnel.

The statement also referenced allegations made by El-Rufai’s wife, Hajiya Asia El-Rufai, who reportedly claimed that her husband had been denied access to his doctor and that she was prevented from delivering food to him while in custody.

According to the party, family members had also raised concerns that even court-approved medical access was allegedly being hindered through administrative protocols.

While the ICPC has denied the allegations and maintained that due procedures were followed, the ADC argued that the continued refusal to allow party leaders access to El-Rufai only deepened public suspicion over the circumstances surrounding his detention.

The party stressed that El-Rufai voluntarily submitted himself to authorities and was entitled under the Nigerian Constitution to dignity, medical care, family access, and fair treatment under the law.

“What we are witnessing increasingly appears to be punishment by process, intimidation through isolation, and an attempt to break the spirit of a leading opposition figure,” the statement added.

The ADC called on the ICPC to immediately grant unrestricted access to El-Rufai by his family, lawyers, doctors, and political associates, warning that failure to do so would reinforce perceptions that state institutions were being weaponised against opposition figures in Nigeria.
