Gov Otti holds thanksgiving service, flags off water projects, ecumenical centre in Abia

UMUAHIA, Nigeria (NPA) — Governor Alex Otti has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the development of Abia State as he marked the third anniversary of his government with a thanksgiving service and the flag-off of major projects in the state.

Otti disclosed this on Sunday after a series of events held in Umuahia as part of activities commemorating his third year in office.

The governor said the thanksgiving service, held at the event centre near Okpara Square, provided an opportunity for reflection on the administration’s journey and to appreciate God for what he described as enduring faithfulness and progress recorded so far.

According to him, the achievements recorded by his administration would not have been possible without the trust, encouragement, and support of the people of Abia State.

“I want to sincerely thank Ndị Abia and everyone who has partnered with us on this journey. Your trust, encouragement, and steadfast support remain the cornerstone of our progress, and without you, the Abia success story would not be unfolding as it is today,” Otti said.

The governor also appreciated religious leaders, particularly Brother Emma Okorie, President of Living Word Ministries International, and other clerics whom he credited for their prayers and support since the beginning of his political journey in 2014.

He stated that their prayers and encouragement had continued to strengthen both him and the state government over the years.

Otti said he reminded worshippers at the thanksgiving service that his decision to serve God together with his household remained the foundation of the successes recorded by his administration.

As part of the anniversary activities, the governor proceeded to Umuagu Ibeku, where he flagged off the construction of an Ecumenical Centre expected to accommodate about 1,000 worshippers.

He explained that the project was tied to a personal vow he made years ago and disclosed that the land for the centre was acquired in 2009.

According to Otti, the proposed Ecumenical Centre is a private project and would not be funded with government resources. “The project is entirely private, and no government funds will be used to execute it,” the governor stated.

The governor later moved to Laguru in Ubakala, Umuahia South Local Government Area, where he simultaneously flagged off the rehabilitation of the ₦1.3 billion Ubakala Water Scheme and the Ariaria Water Scheme in Aba.

He said the projects were aimed at improving access to clean and safe water for residents in the benefiting communities.

Otti noted that the rehabilitation of the water schemes formed part of his administration’s broader commitment to improving public infrastructure and basic social services across the state.

The governor expressed optimism that with continued support from the people and divine guidance, Abia State would continue to witness greater transformation and development in the coming years.

  • ADC dissolves David Mark-Led NWC, elects Bashir Chairman, Kachikwu Presidential Candidate

ADC dissolves David Mark-Led NWC, elects Bashir Chairman, Kachikwu Presidential Candidate

ABUJA, Nigeria (NPA) — The African Democratic Congress on Sunday dissolved the Senator David Mark-led National Working Committee (NWC) and elected a new leadership during a special convention held in Abuja amid renewed internal power struggles within the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The convention, led by the Dumebi Kachikwu faction of the party, also produced Abdulkadir Bashir as the new National Chairman and adopted Dumebi Kachikwu as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

The motion seeking the dissolution of the former NWC was moved by Benue State ADC Chairman, Allias Adiku, and seconded by Zamfara State Chairman, Kabiru Garuba, before the delegates unanimously adopted it by voice vote.

Delegates at the non-elective convention subsequently approved the dissolution of the former leadership and ratified the election of a new NWC to manage the affairs of the party for the next four years.

The convention also adopted the party’s amended 2018 constitution as the operational framework guiding the administration and activities of the ADC nationwide.

Other officials elected into the new NWC included Johnny Derek as Deputy National Chairman and Kennedy Odion as National Secretary, while Kingsley Ogah emerged Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Speaking after his election, Bashir called for unity, fairness, transparency, and inclusive leadership, urging party members to work together toward rebuilding and strengthening the ADC.

Bashir, an indigene of Katsina State, said the party remained committed to democratic principles and constitutional order, insisting that political organisations must not be treated as personal enterprises.

“This is a political party, not a private enterprise. Every political organisation must operate according to established rules, regulations and democratic principles,” he said.

The new chairman attributed the party’s previous internal crisis to selfish interests and attempts by some former leaders to maintain permanent control over the ADC structure nationwide.

According to him, members who resisted injustice within the party remained committed to reclaiming the ADC through lawful and democratic means.

“By the grace of God, we fought through lawful processes and reclaimed the party structure for members committed to democratic accountability and responsible leadership,” Bashir stated.

He noted that opposition coalition groups had shown increasing interest in the ADC because of its growing strength and capacity to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress in future elections.

Bashir also commended the party’s performance during the 2023 general elections despite internal disputes that weakened operations in several states across the country.

The chairman urged aggrieved members to forgive past differences and return to the party, stressing that unity and collective commitment remained essential to repositioning the ADC as a major political force.

Meanwhile, the convention also endorsed Kachikwu as the ADC’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election following a voice vote by delegates from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

In his acceptance speech, Kachikwu pledged to rebuild Nigeria through inclusive governance, institutional reforms, and people-oriented policies aimed at addressing poverty, insecurity, unemployment, and inequality.

He alleged that the ADC had come under pressure from powerful political interests seeking to weaken the party because of political vendettas linked to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Kachikwu accused some politicians of attempting to hijack the party structure for selfish ambitions while underestimating ordinary party members.

“The common man remains the backbone of our democracy, and it is because of them that I proudly accept this presidential nomination,” he said.

The ADC presidential candidate criticised years of failed leadership and poor governance, which he said had pushed millions of Nigerians into hardship and economic difficulties nationwide.

He called for a new national charter that would promote equality, inclusion, and equal rights for all citizens regardless of tribe, religion, or regional background.

Kachikwu also urged Nigerians to reject ethnic and religious politics and instead embrace competence, merit, and character in leadership selection.

He promised massive investments in education, healthcare, technology, broadband infrastructure, agriculture, renewable energy, and youth empowerment if elected president in 2027.

According to him, his administration would transform farming into agribusiness, secure farmlands, improve transportation networks, and strengthen digital innovation across Nigeria.

Kachikwu further pledged decisive action against insecurity, kidnappings, ritual killings, and violent criminal networks through improved intelligence operations and stronger support for security agencies.

He also promised better welfare packages for teachers, improved public schools and hospitals, and transparent governance systems aimed at discouraging corruption and rewarding productivity.

“Our administration will support women, promote creativity and build transparent systems that discourage corruption while rewarding productivity, honesty and hard work,” he stated.

Kachikwu urged Nigerians to support the ADC, promising servant leadership, accountability, and governance focused on protecting citizens’ welfare, dignity, and democratic rights.

  • President Afwerki calls for new global order in 35th Independence Day address

President Afwerki calls for new global order in 35th Independence Day address

ASMARA, Eritrea (NPA) — Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki has used the occasion of the country’s 35th Independence Anniversary to deliver a sweeping speech that combined reflections on Eritrea’s nation‑building journey with sharp critiques of global power structures and calls for a fairer international system.

Speaking in Asmara on May 24, 2026, Afwerki congratulated Eritreans at home and abroad, paying tribute to the sacrifices of martyrs and the resilience of citizens. He described independence as an “ongoing process” that must be continuously consolidated, urging introspection on the nation’s progress and challenges.

Afwerki linked Eritrea’s development trajectory to broader global dynamics, stressing that Africa’s marginalised societies remain victims of exploitative financial systems and zero‑sum paradigms. He argued that the dismantling of the “old global order” — characterised by domination, usury, and dependency — is no longer optional, and pressed for a new framework built on fairness, justice, mutual respect, and sustainable prosperity.

Turning to international affairs, Afwerki devoted significant attention to the policies of U.S. President Donald Trump, who returned to the White House for a second term. He analysed Trump’s “MAGA” doctrine across metrics such as industrial output, technological dominance, military power, and debt, noting America’s fiscal quagmire and questioning whether measures like repatriating industries, tariff hikes, and rare mineral monopolisation could provide lasting remedies. He also raised concerns about U.S. actions in Venezuela and Iran, questioning their legality and broader implications for global stability.

Afwerki emphasised that criticism should not be directed at Trump alone, but also at those complicit in shaping misguided policies. He urged nations to move beyond reactive responses and instead craft proactive strategies rooted in fundamental principles.

On the Africa, Afwerki warned that the African Union risks irrelevance if it fails to fulfil its mission of integration and collective progress. He reiterated Eritrea’s advocacy for regional security mechanisms in the Horn of Africa, stressing that external interventions and funding must end to resolve crises in Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, and South Sudan. He identified ethnic polarisation, warlordism, corruption, and foreign interference as the principal obstacles to nation‑building in the region.

Domestically, Afwerki outlined Eritrea’s development priorities, including expanding road and transport projects, housing programs, electricity and water services, and healthcare. He placed particular emphasis on education from the pre‑school level, highlighting the role of youth professionals and diaspora patriots in sustaining growth. He acknowledged potential delays in supply chains but assured citizens of continued resilience, declaring: “Our Resilience, Our Guarantee! Eternal Glory to our Martyrs, exemplars of steadfastness! Victory to the Masses!”

The President’s address emphasises Eritrea’s dual focus: consolidating independence through socio‑economic development while pressing for a restructured global order that reflects justice and equality. His message was both celebratory and cautionary, urging vigilance against external pressures and renewed commitment to national and regional stability.

ABUJA, Nigeria (NPA) — The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has distanced itself from the activities of John Paul Anih, declaring that he is neither the party’s Enugu State Chairman nor a representative of the party in any capacity.

In a statement signed by Osa Director Esq., National Publicity Secretary, the NDC accused Anih of impersonating the authentic state chairman, Engr. Ibuchukwu Obeta, and conducting a “kangaroo congress” to install himself.

The NDC clarified that the legitimate three‑man screening team for Enugu comprises Hon. Sylvester O. Nwankwo (Chairman), Barr. Ifeanyi Emmanuel Agbom (Secretary), and Ngene Helen Funmilola (Member).

The party warned the public that anyone transacting business with Anih does so at their own risk, reiterating that he is a fraud and does not represent the NDC.
