BREAKING: Woman shot dead during alleged robbery in Thembisa

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (NPA) — Gauteng police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 23-year-old woman during an alleged robbery in Thembisa on Monday morning.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the woman was shot at about 5:45 a.m. on Mapungubwe Street in Temong, Thembisa, while reportedly on her way to work.

Police said her belongings were taken during the incident and that she died at the scene.

The deceased has been identified, but police said her family had not yet been formally notified.

SAPS said preliminary investigations had not established any link between the killing and recent cases involving the bodies of women found in Ekurhuleni.

No arrest has been made, while investigators are following up on leads.

The shooting comes a day after separate mass shootings in South Africa left at least 27 people dead and 26 others injured, with police launching investigations and manhunts in Gauteng and the Western Cape.

In the Gauteng incident, 17 people were killed and 15 others injured when eight unidentified armed men attacked a tavern in Extension 3, Wedela, in the West Rand District on Saturday night.

According to Gauteng police, the attack occurred at about 9:30 p.m. as patrons gathered inside and outside the tavern.

The suspects reportedly opened fire on people outside before entering the tavern and continuing the shooting. Police said the attackers were armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols.

Investigations into the Wedela attack are ongoing, with no arrests reported in the police update.
