NYSC DG tasks procurement officers on continuous capacity building

ABUJA, Nigeria (NPA) — The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has tasked procurement officers of the Scheme to continually update their knowledge and skills to effectively navigate the evolving public procurement environment.

The NYSC Director-General gave the charge in an address delivered on his behalf by the Director of Human Resource Management, Alhaji Ibrahim Mohammed, at the opening of the 2026 Procurement Officers’ Workshop held at the Wetland Hotel, Wuye, Abuja.

Brigadier General Nafiu said continuous human capital development remained essential to building a resilient workforce capable of delivering improved performance and meeting the demands of the modern public procurement system.

He noted that the workshop provides an opportunity for both newly employed and experienced procurement officers to strengthen their professional competencies and acquire practical knowledge relevant to their responsibilities.

The NYSC Director-General urged participants to take ownership of their professional development, pay close attention to the lessons and practical insights to be provided during the workshop and effectively apply the knowledge acquired for the benefit of the Scheme.

Earlier, the Director of Procurement, Mr. Chris Jimba, said the workshop was organised to equip procurement professionals with the knowledge, skills and tools required to effectively navigate the evolving public procurement ecosystem.

He noted that the increasing complexity of modern procurement, which involves several technical, legal and operational procedures, had made regular and structured capacity-building programmes imperative.

Jimba explained that the workshop was designed to provide newly employed procurement officers with a solid foundation while enabling experienced officers to sharpen their skills and keep pace with emerging developments in the sector.

According to him, the training is expected to produce procurement officers who are proficient in the technical, legal and administrative aspects of procurement and capable of effectively discharging their responsibilities in line with relevant laws, regulations and guidelines.

The Director of Procurement expressed optimism that the workshop would provide participants with practical insights into contemporary procurement challenges and innovative approaches to addressing them.

He called on participants to actively engage in the training, discussions and other learning opportunities throughout the workshop, stressing that the knowledge gained would contribute to strengthening procurement processes and promoting a culture of quality, accountability and excellence within the NYSC.
