Nigerian Army confirms death of NYSC corps member in Abuja robbery incident

ABUJA, Nigeria (NPA) — The Nigerian Army has announced the tragic loss of a serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Mr. Abdulsamad Jamiu, during an armed robbery incident in the Dei‑Dei axis of Abuja.

According to a statement issued on April 26, 2026, by Lieutenant Olawuyi Odunola, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters Guards Brigade, the incident occurred in the early hours of April 25 at Shagari Estate, Dei‑Dei. Troops of the Guards Brigade Quick Response Group, on routine night patrol, responded to a distress call following reports of an armed robbery attack. On arrival, the soldiers came under gunfire from fleeing robbers, leading to a brief but intense exchange.

In the course of the engagement, Mr. Jamiu was caught in the crossfire. Despite efforts by troops to secure the area and preserve lives, he succumbed to his injuries. The Army described the loss as heartbreaking, noting that it has cast a deep shadow over personnel of the Guards Brigade.

Preliminary findings indicate the situation was fluid and volatile as troops worked to repel the attackers and protect residents. The Commander, Guards Brigade, alongside officers and soldiers, extended condolences to the family of the deceased, the NYSC, and all affected by the tragedy.

The Brigade confirmed that a thorough investigation has been launched to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident, pledging transparency and accountability. The remains of Mr. Jamiu have been handed over to civil authorities and deposited at Kubwa General Hospital.

Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property within the Federal Capital Territory, the Guards Brigade said it will continue reviewing operational procedures to enhance civilian safety while confronting criminal elements.

Members of the public were urged to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as collective efforts to maintain peace and security continue.
