JUST IN: NAFDAC alerts Nigerians over suspected counterfeit ORACIRE+ toothpaste

LAGOS, Nigeria (NPA) — The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted the public to the circulation of a suspected counterfeit toothpaste, ORACIRE+ TOOTHPASTE, allegedly being distributed in Nigeria under the guise of the registered ORACARE+ Toothpaste.

The agency, in a statement issued on Monday, warned that the suspected counterfeit personal care product may not meet established quality and safety standards and could pose health risks to consumers.

NAFDAC said the origin of the suspected counterfeit product had not been ascertained, adding that its composition, safety and quality had not been verified.

According to the agency, the alert followed a formal complaint and a market intelligence report concerning the alleged widespread distribution of the suspected counterfeit product.

NAFDAC said market surveillance conducted at Ojuwoye Market in Mushin, Lagos, showed that the product closely resembled the registered ORACARE+ Toothpaste in its packaging design and overall presentation.

The agency warned that the similarities could make it difficult for consumers to distinguish the suspected counterfeit product from the genuine product.

In its risk assessment, NAFDAC said counterfeit personal care products could fail to meet established quality and safety standards, potentially exposing consumers to health risks.

The agency reiterated that the origin, composition, safety and quality of the suspected ORACIRE+ Toothpaste had not been verified.

NAFDAC urged members of the public to exercise caution and remain vigilant when purchasing toothpaste and other personal care products, particularly where packaging appears suspicious or differs from the known presentation of registered products.
