Pope Leo sacks San Diego Bishop accused of stealing $250,000

INTERNATIONAL (NPA) — March 11, 2026 — Pope Leo has accepted the resignation of Bishop Emanuel Hana Shaleta of San Diego, following his arrest on suspicion of embezzling $250,000 from his congregation, the Vatican announced Tuesday.

Shaleta, who has led the Chaldean Catholic community in San Diego since 2017, pleaded not guilty to 16 counts of embezzlement and money laundering during a court hearing on Monday, according to local media.

San Diego Deputy District Attorney Joel Madero said the alleged crimes occurred in 2024 and were uncovered by a church employee who noticed missing funds, KGTV reported. Shaleta was arrested on March 5 at San Diego International Airport while attempting to leave the United States, according to the sheriff’s office.

His lawyer told the court that the bishop had been planning a trip to Germany.

The Chaldean Catholic Church, which follows an Eastern Christian liturgical rite but recognizes the pope’s authority, has about 71,000 members in San Diego, Vatican statistics show.

Peter Obi urges women and youth inclusion at REFELA Conference in Gambia

Lagos, Nigeria (NPA) — March 11, 2026 — Nigerian politician and 2027 presidential aspirant under the All Democratic Congress (ADC), Mr Peter Obi, has called for greater inclusion of women and youth in national development strategies. He made the appeal on Tuesday while addressing participants at the REFELA National Conference in Banjul, The Gambia, themed “Accelerating Representation, Safeguarding, and Strengthening Women’s Rights.”

Serving as both Guest Speaker and Chief Guest of the occasion, Obi aligned his remarks with this year’s International Women’s Day theme, “Give to Gain.”

He stressed that the prosperity of nations is directly linked to how seriously they invest in their people, particularly women. “When women are given equal access to education, finance, and leadership opportunities, they become not just participants but critical drivers of national development,” he said.

In a statement issued Wednesday, Obi emphasised that for countries like Nigeria, The Gambia, and other African nations, sustainable prosperity requires deliberate investment in human capital. He highlighted education, healthcare, skills development, and economic inclusion for women and youth as the foundation for growth.

Obi, widely recognised as the leader of the Obidient Movement with strong youth support, noted that empowering women, fostering accountability, and prioritising education would enable Africa to transform potential into tangible progress. “This is development as freedom,” he declared, urging governments to embrace inclusive policies that build shared opportunities for all.

President Tinubu approves Bonga Deepwater Project in a $20 billion breakthrough

Abuja, Nigeria (NPA) — March 11, 2026 — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a Final Investment Decision (FID) for the Bonga Deepwater Project, unlocking an estimated $20 billion in Foreign Direct Investment and positioning Nigeria for a new era of offshore oil and gas production.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) announced the milestone in a statement signed by Chief Corporate Communications Officer Andy Odeh. The approval followed months of technical and commercial negotiations involving NNPC Limited, the Nigeria Revenue Service, Special Adviser to the President on Energy Olu Verheijen, and Shell CEO Wael Sawan.

NNPC Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, hailed the breakthrough: “This approval is a testament to the President’s leadership, NNPC’s disciplined execution, and our ability to structure complex, bankable transactions that deliver value for Nigeria. For nearly two decades, the Bonga Southwest project remained stalled. Today, under President Tinubu’s reform-driven leadership, we have broken that logjam.”

The statement noted that the Bonga Southwest project will be the first FID on a Nigerian deepwater Production Sharing Contract asset since 2008, re-establishing Nigeria as a premier investment destination. The fiscal package includes an enhanced Production Tax Credit and resolution of the 2021 dispute settlement agreement, creating a competitive framework balancing national value with investor returns.

Operated by Shell with all international oil companies in Nigeria as partners, the project is expected to deliver 150,000 barrels of crude oil per day and 140 million standard cubic feet of gas daily, while creating over 5,000 direct and indirect jobs.

“With Presidential approval secured, NNPC and partners will now progress toward execution, triggering multi-billion-dollar capital commitments that will transform Nigeria’s deepwater landscape,” the statement added.

Lagos, Nigeria (NPA) — March 11, 2026 — The Enugu State Governor, Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has announced a breakthrough for the state-owned airline, Enugu Air, as it received its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

The certificate was formally presented to Governor Mbah at the Government House, Lion Building, Enugu, by the Commissioner for Transport, Dr Obi Ozor, on March 9, 2026.

In a statement, Governor Mbah described the milestone as a transformative step for Enugu’s aviation ambitions. “This milestone is more than a regulatory approval; it is a strategic step in our broader vision to transform Enugu into a premier aviation hub in Nigeria and West Africa,” he said.

He emphasised that the AOC would enable Enugu Air to expand into new destinations, boost tourism, and stimulate economic growth through job creation and investment.

Governor Mbah further noted that aviation is central to his administration’s “Tomorrow is Here” agenda, linking transport, commerce, tourism, and logistics to unlock Enugu’s full potential. With the AOC secured, Enugu Air is now positioned to enter Nigeria’s aviation landscape as a reliable carrier connecting the Southeast to key national and international routes.

Nigeria, South Africa armies to deepen cooperation for regional security

Abuja, Nigeria (NPA) — March 10, 2026 — The Nigerian Army has pledged to strengthen military cooperation with the South African Army, following a visit by the Chief of the South African Army, Lieutenant General Lawrence Khulekani Mbatha, to the Army Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.

Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, said Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, emphasised that closer collaboration among African militaries is critical to addressing terrorism and insurgency. He noted that shared training and operational knowledge would enhance regional security and professional capacity.

Shaibu highlighted Nigeria’s counter‑terrorism efforts in the North‑East under Operation HADIN KAI, stressing the importance of specialised training in detecting and neutralising Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). He said cooperation with South Africa would strengthen these programs and improve battlefield survivability.

The army chief also pointed to ongoing collaboration in military education. Nigerian officers attend courses at the South African Defence College, while South African officers serve as instructors in Nigerian institutions such as the Army War College and the Armed Forces Command and Staff College. These exchanges, he said, build institutional ties and leadership capacity.

Mbatha, for his part, praised Nigeria’s extensive battlefield experience and expressed interest in learning from its operational strategies against asymmetric threats. He noted that South Africa’s expertise in aviation maintenance and pilot training could support Nigeria’s efforts to expand its air capabilities.

Both leaders concluded with a commitment to sustain joint training, operational exchanges, and technical cooperation. They agreed that stronger collaboration between Nigeria and South Africa would enhance the effectiveness of their forces and contribute to stability and collective defense across Africa.

  • Trump’s bombing of Iran is a simple farmer-herder conflict—Mike Arnold consoles Pantami

Trump’s bombing of Iran is a simple farmer-herder conflict—Mike Arnold consoles Pantami

INTERNATIONAL (NPA) — March 10, 2026 — Mike Arnold, a former mayor of Blanco City, Texas, USA, and now a leading activist on religious violence in Nigeria, has ridiculed Nigeria’s pioneer Minister of Digital Economy Technology, Isa Pantami, after a viral video showed him weeping over the killing of Iran’s former Supreme Leader, Ayotola Khamenei.

Arnold, founder of Africa Arise International and Africa Arise USA, issued a sarcastic statement on Monday in response to Pantami’s grief. He asserted that the U.S. President’s bombing of Iran and the killing of its leader should be seen as nothing more than a “farmer-herder conflict.”

He wrote: “Oh, poor terrorist. He should know that Trump bombing Iran is not really Trump’s fault. He couldn’t help himself; it was just global warming. A simple farmer-herder conflict. Maybe he should dialogue with Trump, understand his position, offer him government money and jobs. They are brothers, after all. Maybe then Trump will stop bombing Iran and we could all be happy together.”

Arnold’s remarks reference the official stance often taken during the Buhari administration, in which Pantami served as a cabinet member. At the time, the government frequently described widespread killings by armed Fulani herdsmen as “farmer-herder clashes.”

That narrative persisted until the Tinubu-led government reclassified such attacks as acts of terrorism, declaring that anyone who sacks villages and kills civilians would be treated accordingly. Analysts note that this shift in terminology has sharpened the mandate of security agencies, enabling them to respond more decisively to protect communities across Nigeria.

We’ll defeat terrorists, strengthen economy, Tinubu assures Nigerians

POLITICS (Agency Reports) —March 10, 2026 — President Bola Tinubu on Monday assured Nigerians that the country would never allow agents of instability to undermine its peace, unity and sovereignty, assuring that terrorists would be defeated.

Tinubu gave the assurance while hosting religious and traditional leaders for an interfaith breaking of fast at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He acknowledged the critical roles of religious and traditional leaders in promoting peace, stability and moral guidance within their communities.

“Yes, we are challenged; the terrorists are very desperate now because they are getting barraged and defeated.

They leave trails of blood in their wake. But I assure you of one thing: Nigeria will never surrender.

“We are not discouraged. We are going to win and win well,”

Tinubu also pledged to continue using the mandate given to him to strengthen the economy and promote prosperity.

“I am just grateful, one person among millions, that I have been given the opportunity to serve.

“All I can do is promise that I will continue to be faithful in discharging my duty.

“I can report that the economy has turned the corner. It is getting better. Pensioners are gradually getting relief.”

He said the administration had taken decisive steps to stabilise public finances and avert economic collapse.

“We have saved Nigeria from bankruptcy. It was very daunting and challenging when we took over. But today I can say with pride and joy that we have survived,”

He said no state governor was now struggling to borrow from banks to pay workers’ salaries.

Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to increasing investment in critical sectors such as agriculture and education.

He urged Nigerians not to lose hope, assuring them that his administration remained focused on building a safer, secure and prosperous country.

In his remarks, the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, thanked the president for hosting leaders of the two major religions at the breaking of fast.

He said the gathering symbolised unity and prayed for peace, stability and divine guidance for the country and its leadership.

Abubakar represented the President of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar.

Also speaking, the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Archbishop Daniel Okoh, assured the president of the church’s support for efforts to strengthen the economy and security.

Okoh represented the President of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), Dr Stephen Baba-Panya.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that traditional rulers and religious leaders from the six geopolitical zones attended the event. (NAN).

  • ECOWAS Court pledges to protect women’s rights through effective justice delivery

ECOWAS Court pledges to protect women’s rights through effective justice delivery

Lagos, Nigeria (NPA) —March 10, 2026 — The ECOWAS Court of Justice has pledged its commitment to ensuring the protection of the rights of women and girls across the West African sub-region through effective justice delivery.

President of the Court, Justice Ricardo Gonçalves, made the pledge at the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration organised by the ECOWAS Court’s Women’s Forum on Monday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event, which is celebrated on March 8 yearly, was sub-themed: “Break the Silence, End Gender-Based Violence Now.”

“As we celebrate our women and their invaluable contributions to the achievements of the court, we also reaffirm our collective commitment to delivering justice, advancing the rule of law, ending violence and discrimination, and creating a future where every woman and girl in the ECOWAS region can thrive in safety and dignity.

“We pledge to continue taking actions through our judgments, our outreach programmes, and our collaborative partnerships with member states and other stakeholders, to be able to build a region where justice and protection of the rights of women and girls is not an aspiration but a lived reality.

“At the ECOWAS Court of Justice, we recognise that the protection of women and girls’ rights within the ECOWAS space is central to the advancement of justice, upholding human dignity, fostering inclusive development, and strengthening our community,” he said.

According to him, the event’s sub-theme resonates deeply with the mission of the court and the past strides it has made in advancing the rule of law and protecting fundamental rights across West Africa.

He said this year’s global theme: “Rights, Justice,  Action For All Women and Girls,” was a reminder that women are both participants in the pursuit and pillars of strength within the court.

The court’s president said that the giant strides made by the court over the years reflected the court’s unwavering belief that the rights of women and girls must be protected, and justice must serve all without distinction.

Gonçalves, represented by Mrs Marie Saine, the Court’s Acting Deputy Chief Registrar, stressed that protecting the rights of women and girls within the ECOWAS sub-region was central to justice advancement.

“Through our jurisprudence, we have upheld fundamental rights of women and girls, challenged discrimination, and provided remedies for victims of sexual and gender-based violence and inequality.

“These groundbreaking decisions have not only delivered justice to individuals but also set important legal precedents that reinforce the dignity and protection of women and girls throughout the region.

“They have also contributed to the development of regional human rights jurisprudence, influenced national policies, and triggered cultural and legal reforms,” he said.

He maintained that justice must be accessible and action must be taken to ensure that every woman and girl in West Africa can live free from discrimination and all forms of gender-based violence and be empowered to contribute fully to society.

According to him, gender-based violence is not only a violation of human rights, but also a barrier to equality, justice, and sustainable development.

  • Attack on Rotimi Amaechi: Obi Condemns Rising Political Thuggery, Blames APC

Attack on Rotimi Amaechi: Obi Condemns Rising Political Thuggery, Blames APC

Abuja, Nigeria (NPA) — March 9, 2026 — Presidential hopeful and leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peter Obi, has condemned what he described as Nigeria’s descent into a dangerous era of political thuggery aimed at suppressing democracy and stifling political participation.

Obi’s remarks followed reports of an attack on fellow presidential aspirant Rotimi Amaechi on Friday, March 6, 2026. Gunmen ambushed his convoy along the Omuanwa–Ubima road in Ikwerre Local Government Area during a political engagement in Rivers State.

Amaechi’s convoy was allegedly assaulted by politically sponsored thugs, while offices of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the area were set ablaze, sparking widespread condemnation and raising concerns about escalating political violence.

In a statement on Monday, Obi warned: “The failure to arrest and prosecute those responsible for these heinous acts signals a grave danger—the steady erosion of the very foundation of democracy and the entrenchment of lawlessness by those entrusted to enforce the law.”

He cautioned that unchecked violence could push citizens to take matters into their own hands: “If we do not confront this troubling trend with unwavering resolve, citizens will feel compelled to take matters into their own hands simply to exercise their democratic rights.”

Obi further stressed that Nigeria cannot claim to be a democracy while political actors are endangered for expressing themselves. “A nation where thugs dictate who can gather, speak, or campaign is not practising democracy; it is careening toward a brutal regime of political thuggery, aided and abetted by those in power.”

He concluded: “We must unequivocally reject this descent into a democracy of thuggery. Nigerians deserve a political environment organised through competency, capacity, compassion, and commitment to the good of society, not one controlled by incompetence and thuggery. Democracy must be defined by the rule of law, accountability, competence, and the unrestricted participation of citizens in shaping their nation’s future through political actions.”

  • El-Rufai: Obi accuses Tinubu administration of persecuting political opponents

El-Rufai: Obi accuses Tinubu administration of persecuting political opponents

Abuja, Nigeria — March 9, 2026 — Peter Obi, leader of Nigeria’s opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC), has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s All Progressives Congress (APC) government of engaging in what he described as “blatant persecution of political opponents disguised as criminal prosecution.”

In a statement issued Monday, Obi cited the arrests and continued detention of former Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, both senior figures in the ADC. He questioned the timing of their arrests, noting that they coincided with their public commitment to challenge the current administration in the 2027 elections.

Obi criticised the methods used in their apprehension, arguing that they contravened the principles of the rule of law. He said prosecutorial decisions must be based on credible evidence and probable cause, presented transparently and without political motives. “The undue denial of bail or unjustly stringent conditions imposed on bail leave little doubt that the government is wielding criminal prosecution as a weapon against its political opponents,” he stated.

He further expressed concern over the repeated transfers of El-Rufai between the EFCC, ICPC, and DSS, describing the moves as “a desperate search for any charge that might stick, straying dangerously close to a fishing expedition rather than a credible investigation.”

Obi emphasised the need for a justice system that instils confidence in citizens, ensuring that no one is persecuted for political beliefs. “As we approach a critical election period, the government must cease its efforts to undermine political opponents under the pretence of battling corruption and wrongdoing,” he said.

While reaffirming his support for the fight against corruption, Obi insisted that such efforts must begin with those currently in power and be conducted with integrity and transparency. “A credible anti-corruption and anti-wrongdoing campaign cannot afford to be selective,” he added.
