Peter Obi condemns alleged assault, rape of students during Osun varsity hostel raid

ABUJA, Nigeria (NPA) — The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Peter Obi, has condemned the alleged invasion of students’ hostels at Osun State University, Osogbo, during which students were reportedly assaulted, robbed and subjected to various forms of abuse, including allegations of rape.
In a statement titled “The Disturbing Reports from Osun State University,” issued on Thursday, Obi expressed deep concern over the allegations, calling for a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation by the military authorities.
According to the former Anambra State governor, reports indicate that students were allegedly assaulted, humiliated, and dispossessed of their personal belongings, while some female students were subjected to degrading treatment, including rape.
“I have read with deep concern the troubling reports of soldiers invading students’ hostels at Osun State University, Osogbo, during which students were allegedly assaulted, humiliated, dispossessed of their personal belongings, and female students subjected to degrading treatment, including rape,” Obi said.
He stressed that every Nigerian deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, noting that the country’s Armed Forces have earned a reputation for courage, discipline and sacrifice in defending the nation’s territorial integrity.
“Our Armed Forces are renowned for their courage, discipline and sacrifice in defending our nation. They are not known for such barbarity against the very citizens they are sworn to protect,” he said.
Obi urged the military high command to investigate the allegations thoroughly and ensure that anyone found responsible is held accountable.
“I therefore urge the military high command to conduct a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation into these allegations. Anyone found culpable should be brought to justice,” he said.
According to him, holding offending personnel accountable would not only deliver justice to the victims but also preserve the honour and integrity of the Armed Forces while serving as a deterrent against future abuses.
He added that respect for human dignity is fundamental to building public confidence in national institutions.
“A nation that respects human dignity builds confidence in its institutions. We must never tolerate impunity or the abuse of power,” Obi said.
The NDC presidential candidate concluded the statement with his campaign slogan: “A New Nigeria is Possible.”
