Enugu government dismisses alleged Awgu attack as false

Enugu, NIGERIA (NPA) — The Enugu State Government has categorically denied reports circulating on social media alleging that innocent citizens were attacked in Awgu, Awgu Local Government Area.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr Malachy Agbo, the government described the claims as “spurious, fake, and baseless”, insisting that no such incident occurred in Awgu or any other part of the state.
Dr Agbo stressed that residents across Enugu are peacefully going about their lawful activities without any security breach of the nature alleged. He warned that the false report was deliberately concocted to misinform the public and create unnecessary panic.
“The report exists only in the imagination of those peddling it. We urge members of the public to disregard the misinformation and refrain from spreading unverified claims capable of causing fear and confusion,” the statement read.
The Commissioner reaffirmed that Governor Peter Mbah’s administration has made security a top priority, investing heavily in measures to safeguard lives and property. He condemned attempts by malicious actors to undermine public confidence, warning that anyone found spreading fake news would face the full weight of the law.
The government reiterated its commitment to protecting Ndi Enugu, assuring that the safety and well‑being of citizens remain central to the governor’s transformational agenda. Residents were urged to remain calm, vigilant, and law‑abiding while relying only on verified sources for information.
