ABUJA, Nigeria (NPA) — The Nigerian Youths in Politics has cautioned political actors against the intimidation of young aspirants across parties, warning that such actions pose a direct threat to democracy and the future of leadership in the country.

Speaking at a news conference in Abuja on Friday, the group’s Chairman, Mr Felix Tolorunju, expressed concern over alleged rising cases of harassment targeting young politicians who have purchased nomination forms to contest elective positions. He alleged that some governors and established political leaders resort to intimidation once youths declare interest in contesting state-level offices.

Tolorunju said such practices could discourage youth participation in governance, stressing that democracy thrives on inclusion and equal opportunity. “The continued harassment of young aspirants amounts to an attack on the future of leadership in Nigeria and a blatant violation of the constitutional rights of youths to participate freely in the democratic process,” he stated.

He called on governors, political parties, and stakeholders to desist from acts of suppression and ensure a level playing field for all aspirants regardless of age or political affiliation. He warned that if the intimidation persists, the group would mobilise Nigerian youths for peaceful nationwide protests against political parties and leaders accused of silencing emerging voices.

Tolorunju also appealed to the media and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to hold political actors accountable to the principles of fairness and inclusion. He emphasised that allowing intimidation to continue would amount to a failure of democracy and undermine the constitutional right of citizens to participate in governance.

The group urged young Nigerians to remain steadfast in defending their right to contest elections and contribute to national development, insisting that youth participation is critical to shaping Nigeria’s future.

This warning comes as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections, with growing calls for greater youth involvement in politics and leadership.
