ABUJA, Nigeria (NPA) — Senator Ireti Heebah Kingibe has called for a thorough, transparent, and accountable investigation into the death of Abdulsamad Jamiu, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member killed in an incident involving personnel of the Nigerian Army.

In a statement she personally signed, the lawmaker representing the Federal Capital Territory said she was deeply saddened by the incident, describing it as a painful reminder of the need for professionalism and caution in security operations.

“This painful loss is a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the urgent need for heightened caution and professionalism in all security operations. While preliminary reports indicate that this was an accidental shooting, the consequences are devastating and irreversible,” she said.

Kingibe extended condolences to the family of the deceased, noting that the loss of a child under such circumstances is unimaginable. She added that the entire FCT community shares in the grief of the bereaved family.

She stressed that no family should have to endure such tragedy, particularly when the victim was serving the nation under the NYSC scheme.

While acknowledging the initial response by the Nigerian Army, the senator insisted that a full investigation must be conducted to ensure accountability and prevent a recurrence.

“Beyond response, there must be a thorough, transparent, and accountable investigation to ensure that justice is served and that lessons are learned,” she said.

Kingibe further noted that the incident highlights the urgent need to strengthen rules of engagement, improve coordination between security agencies and civilians, and enhance protection for corps members and other vulnerable groups.

She pledged to engage relevant authorities to push for reforms aimed at prioritising citizens’ safety and restoring public confidence in security institutions.

The senator concluded by praying for the repose of the deceased and strength for his family to bear the loss.
