    OWERRI, Nigeria (NPA) — Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, has extended warm felicitations to fathers in the southeastern state and across Nigeria on the occasion of the 2026 Father’s Day celebration.

    “I extend my warm felicitations to our fathers in Imo State and across Nigeria as we commemorate the 2026 Father’s Day. This occasion rightly honors the noble task of fatherhood in building, nurturing, and sustaining our society,” the governor said.

    He noted that as heads of families, fathers have consistently demonstrated remarkable dedication, responsibility, and commitment to shaping a better and more stable society.

    Uzodimma’s tribute comes at a time when fathers are confronted with the herculean task of providing for their families amidst spiraling inflation and its attendant consequences, including high costs of food, rent, school fees, medical care, and other essentials, which have stretched many to breaking point.

    The governor prayed that God continues to grant fathers strength, wisdom, and grace to carry out their responsibilities with greater impact. “Your role remains indispensable in fostering values that strengthen both family and nation,” he said.

    He further noted that the reforms, policies, and programs of his administration are focused on driving economic growth and improving the quality of life for the people. “These efforts complement your enduring contributions toward building the society we all desire,” Uzodimma added.

    Obi congratulated Carter Efe, who emerged victorious in the bout against Portable, while commending both entertainers for demonstrating sportsmanship and healthy competition.

    In a statement titled “Harnessing Youth Potential Through Sport,” Obi said the contest reflected the creativity, resilience and energy of Nigerian youths, adding that such initiatives could become important platforms for talent discovery and national development if properly supported.

    “I followed the recent celebrity boxing match where Carter Efe emerged victorious over the reigning champion, Portable. I congratulate the winner on his determination and commend both participants for embracing the spirit of sportsmanship,” Obi said.

    ABUJA, Nigeria (NPA) — The Federal Government has summoned the Acting High Commissioner of South Africa to Nigeria over recent anti-foreigner protests and alleged attacks targeting Nigerians and their businesses in the country.

    In a press release issued on Saturday, signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the envoy had been invited to a meeting scheduled for Monday, May 4, 2026, at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.

    According to the ministry, the meeting is aimed at formally conveying Nigeria’s “profound concern” over recent developments capable of affecting the longstanding cordial relations between both countries.

    The ministry said discussions would focus on ongoing demonstrations by various groups in South Africa, documented cases of mistreatment of Nigerian citizens and attacks on businesses owned by Nigerians.

    The development comes amid growing concerns over renewed xenophobic violence in South Africa, with reports and viral videos showing attacks against African migrants and foreign-owned businesses. One of the videos circulating online allegedly showed two Ethiopian shopkeepers shot dead at close range by a suspected xenophobic attacker, further fueling outrage across the continent over the deteriorating security situation for Africans living in South Africa.

    Political leaders and activists within South Africa have also condemned the violence. Julius Malema and other public figures have called for an immediate end to attacks targeting Africans and foreign nationals in the country.

    “The Ministry is aware of the growing discontent among Nigerians concerning the treatment of their nationals in South Africa,” the statement said.

    The Federal Government, however, urged Nigerians to remain calm, while reaffirming its commitment to protecting the rights, safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens residing in South Africa.

    ABUJA, Nigeria (NPA) — Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has dismissed reports suggesting that he and his political associates have concluded plans to exit the African Democratic Congress (ADC) amid the party’s growing internal and legal challenges.

    In a statement released today, Kwankwaso said no final decision had been taken regarding his political future, contrary to widespread speculation about possible realignments within the ADC.

    The former Minister of Defence said recent developments within the party, including court rulings and legal disputes, had placed the ADC in a “precarious position.”

    According to him, the Supreme Court judgment affirming the legitimacy of the David Mark-led National Working Committee also returned aspects of the dispute to the High Court, while a Federal High Court recently ruled against the party’s convention.

    Kwankwaso further disclosed that the Attorney General of the Federation had approached a Federal High Court seeking the deregistration of the ADC. He said the unfolding crisis bore similarities to the circumstances that forced him and his allies to leave the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), which he described as being plagued by externally influenced legal problems.

    The former governor revealed that consultations had commenced with political stakeholders, including leaders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the People’s Redemption Party (PRP), and other groups to determine the best political path forward. “We shall announce our decision in the soonest possible time,” he said.

    Kwankwaso also addressed speculation surrounding his alleged presidential ambition ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that neither the ADC had zoned its presidential ticket nor had he declared interest in contesting. “I have therefore neither declared any intention to run for president nor endorsed any aspirant. All speculations to the contrary are premature and unfounded,” he stated.

    The former presidential aspirant said his political history reflected his commitment to democracy, party unity and national interest above personal ambition. He recalled supporting former President Muhammadu Buhari after losing the 2014 APC presidential primary and backing Atiku Abubakar after the 2019 Peoples Democratic Party presidential primary.

    Kwankwaso also explained that his absence from two recent ADC stakeholders’ meetings was due to unavoidable personal commitments, adding that he had communicated his apologies to the party leadership.

    He assured supporters that any definitive political decision would be formally communicated through official channels at the appropriate time.

    ABUJA, Nigeria (NPA) — The Nigerian Army has clarified the circumstances surrounding the arrest of blogger and social media influencer Justice Mark Chidiebere, popularly known as “Justice Crack,” over allegations linked to the violation of military social media regulations and acts capable of undermining national security.

    In a statement issued on Saturday, signed by Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, the Army said its attention was drawn to complaints allegedly made by some soldiers concerning feeding and welfare issues, which were published on social media by Chidiebere.

    The Army said the matter was under investigation for alleged breach of the Armed Forces Social Media Policy and an attempt to misinform the public.

    According to the military, preliminary findings showed that the soldiers discussed a wide range of issues with the blogger, who was alleged to have encouraged actions capable of creating discontent within the military system.

    The statement added that one of the conversations reportedly bordered on subversive conduct. “It is important to state that a situation where civilians cultivate vulnerable personnel towards acts of subversion has far-reaching implications on discipline and national security,” the Army said.

    The military disclosed that Chidiebere was arrested alongside the soldiers involved for the purpose of investigation.

    While the soldiers remain in military custody, the Army said the blogger had been handed over to the relevant civil authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution.

    The Army’s clarification follows public outcry by the blogger’s wife, civil society groups and concerned Nigerians over his sudden disappearance.

    On Thursday, Sahara Reporters reportedly published a photograph allegedly showing the blogger’s vehicle parked inside a military facility in Abuja, further fueling concerns over his whereabouts.

    Although the Army did not specify the agency to which Chidiebere was transferred for prosecution, the statement is expected to ease growing public anxiety over the blogger’s safety and location.

    The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law and pledged continued collaboration with relevant agencies to ensure justice is served.

    ABUJA, Nigeria (NPA) — The Obidient Movement has called on supporters of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to remain calm amid growing speculation over recent political developments and his reported future political alignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

    In a statement released on Saturday, the movement said it was aware of widespread concerns and reports surrounding ongoing political engagements involving Obi and other stakeholders.

    The statement comes amid speculation that Obi may part ways with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following alleged disagreements within the party over the process for selecting its presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

    Although the reports remain unconfirmed, the group said Obi was currently engaged in “extensive, high-level consultations” with political allies, stakeholders and aligned movements across the country.

    According to the movement, the consultations are aimed at determining the most strategic and effective political direction in the interest of Nigerians and the broader vision of building a “New Nigeria.”

    The Obidient Movement stated that its decisions would continue to be guided by integrity, accountability and active citizen participation.

    “These consultations are deliberate, thorough, and guided by the overriding objective of securing a future that works for all Nigerians,” the statement said.

    The group urged its members and supporters across Nigeria and in the diaspora not to be influenced by speculation or unverified political reports.

    It added that Obi remained committed to the movement’s objectives and would, at the appropriate time, address the public on the current political situation and the way forward.

    “Our strength lies in our unity and focus. Let us remain steadfast as we await further communication,” the statement added.

    Eno made the appeal during the May Covenant Service held in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, where he urged citizens to promote the image of the state and set aside political and personal differences in the interest of progress.

    The governor said Akwa Ibom people must see themselves as ambassadors of the state’s development and work together to sustain peace and stability.

    He also announced a three-day Prayer Summit scheduled for June 3 to 5, 2026, as part of efforts to promote peace and harmony ahead of the 2027 elections, which are often marked by political tension.

    According to a statement issued by the governor, the service also provided an opportunity to announce the maiden international flight of Ibom Air from Uyo to Accra, Ghana, scheduled to commence on today.

    Eno said the international operation would be supported by a newly acquired aircraft aimed at strengthening the state’s aviation capacity and reinforcing its ambition to become a regional aviation hub.

    The governor stressed that sustainable development and economic growth could only thrive in an atmosphere of peace. “I urge everyone to remain peaceful and focused as we continue to build our State together,” he said.

    OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso (NPA) — The Presidency of Burkina Faso has warned against the circulation of what it described as fake and manipulated versions of the Manifesto of the Popular Progressive Revolution (RPP), threatening severe sanctions against individuals involved in its unauthorised distribution.

    In an official statement issued on May 1 by Florent Pélagie Ibrahim Guigma, Director of Communication and Public Relations at the Presidency of Burkina Faso, authorities said they observed that immediately after the official release of the manifesto, “ill-intentioned individuals” began illegally distributing physical and digital versions falsely presented as the authentic document.

    The presidency cautioned the public against relying on the dubious versions, saying their contents may have been altered, distorted or manipulated.

    According to the statement, only the official version released through the Presidency’s authorised distribution channels accurately reflects the “letter and spirit” of the RPP vision.

    Authorities disclosed that official copies of the manifesto are being distributed through designated centres across the country, including the National Archives in Ouagadougou, the headquarters of Éditions Sidwaya, regional offices in Bobo-Dioulasso and various governorates nationwide.

    The government further stressed that the document is protected by law and warned that anyone involved in fraud, counterfeiting or sabotage linked to the publication would face heavy sanctions.

    ABUJA, Nigeria (NPA) — Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, announced that the Federal Executive Council, presided over by President Bola Tinubu, has approved a settlement to end the two-decade-long dispute between the Federal Government and Bi-Courtney Ltd over the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal Two (MM2) in Lagos.

    Keyamo explained that negotiations had been ongoing for more than a year to break the impasse. Under the agreement:

    • Bi-Courtney wrote off ₦132 billion in court-assessed damages against the Federal Government.
    • Bi-Courtney handed back MMI Airport (the old local terminal), which the Supreme Court had ordered to be transferred to it.
    • Bi-Courtney relinquished its exclusive right to operate any private or domestic airport in Lagos State.
    • Bi-Courtney agreed to commence payment of concession fees under the 2003 Concession Agreement, which had been suspended during the dispute.

    In exchange, the Federal Government agreed to:

    • Write off all unpaid concession fees accumulated over nearly 20 years.
    • Return the uncompleted hotel and conference centre opposite the airport to Bi-Courtney, with a 24-month deadline for completion and shared revenue arrangements.
    • Move regional flights to MM2, subject to capacity.
    • Provide Bi-Courtney with additional land to expand the MM2 apron for more aircraft.

    The settlement brings closure to one of Nigeria’s longest-running aviation disputes. For years, the disagreement had revolved around unpaid concession fees, exclusive rights claims, and conflicting court judgments, creating uncertainty for both the government and Bi-Courtney. By resolving these contentious issues, the agreement is seen as a balanced compromise that restores revenue streams for the government, secures operational clarity for Bi-Courtney, and ultimately benefits passengers and the aviation sector by ensuring stability and growth.
