Ramaphosa secures ANC backing amid renewed ‘Farmgate’ impeachment push

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (NPA) — South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has reportedly secured the backing of the African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee amid renewed impeachment proceedings linked to the controversial “Farmgate” scandal.

According to South Africa’s public broadcaster, SABC, the ANC’s top decision-making body endorsed Ramaphosa during a meeting held on Wednesday, providing the president with political support as pressure mounts over the revived impeachment process.

The ANC had yet to officially confirm the development as of Thursday, while a party spokesperson did not immediately respond to requests for comments on the report.

The renewed controversy follows a recent Constitutional Court ruling which revived impeachment proceedings against Ramaphosa over allegations connected to the theft of large sums of foreign currency hidden at his private Phala Phala ranch.

Ramaphosa, who has served as South Africa’s president since 2018, has consistently denied wrongdoing in the matter.

The scandal, popularly referred to as “Farmgate,” emerged after reports that about 580,000 dollars in cash allegedly hidden inside furniture at the president’s farm was stolen in 2020.

The incident triggered public debate over the source of the money, whether it was properly declared, and why such funds were allegedly kept at the property instead of being deposited in a financial institution.

Reacting earlier this week to the Constitutional Court decision, Ramaphosa said he respected the ruling and would defend himself through lawful means.

The ANC had initially blocked impeachment efforts against the president in 2022, but the Constitutional Court last week ruled that Parliament must establish an impeachment committee to conduct further investigations into the allegations.

On Wednesday, the Speaker of the National Assembly announced that the impeachment committee would consist of 31 members drawn from the 16 political parties represented in the lower chamber of parliament.

Under the arrangement, the ANC will control the largest representation on the committee with nine members, while its coalition partner, the Democratic Alliance (DA), will hold five seats.

Political analysts, however, say Ramaphosa is likely to survive any impeachment vote should the process advance to the floor of parliament.

An impeachment would require the support of a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly, a threshold considered difficult to achieve given the ANC’s strong parliamentary presence.

The ANC currently controls roughly 40 per cent of seats in the lower house, positioning the ruling party as a decisive factor in determining the outcome of the proceedings.

The party has postponed its planned media briefing on the outcome of the National Executive Committee meeting from Thursday to Friday.

The Farmgate controversy remains one of the most politically sensitive issues confronting Ramaphosa’s administration as the president continues to face scrutiny from opposition parties and anti-corruption groups.

  • ‘NDC misled the court into registering it’ — Dr Umar Ardo alleges

‘NDC misled the court into registering it’ — Dr Umar Ardo alleges

ABUJA, Nigeria (NPA) — Promoter of the proposed African Democratic Alliance (ADA), Dr Umar Ardo, has defended the party’s registration effort and faulted Wednesday’s Federal High Court ruling dismissing its case against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show monitored by our correspondent on Thursday, Ardo said the court decision was based on a preliminary objection filed by two individuals who joined the suit.

“Yesterday, the Federal High Court dismissed our case on the basis of a preliminary injunction by those two guys who joined us. We will look at it and test it with the veracity of the law,” he said.

Ardo, a political strategist and convener of the League of Northern Democrats, insisted that the ADA project was not solely targeted at the 2027 general elections but aimed at providing a long-term political alternative for Nigerians.

“We are not registering ADA just because of the 2027 election. Elections will always come and go. We believe ADA is the right alternative,” he stated.

The former presidential aspirant also addressed criticisms surrounding his opposition to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), a political party recently registered by INEC and associated with former Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Seriake Dickson.

Ardo argued that his position against the NDC should not be interpreted as opposition to coalition efforts or other opposition parties.

“It is not factually true that because you oppose NDC, you are opposing all opposition political parties,” he said.

He alleged that the NDC did not properly follow the registration process before securing approval from INEC, describing the development as misleading.

“I opposed the NDC to correct what I consider a national fraud. NDC misled the court into registering it,” Ardo alleged.

The ADA promoter further claimed that he had engaged political figures close to former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and personally spoke with former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, urging them not to align with the NDC.

However, Ardo did not provide specific details regarding the concerns he claimed to have raised about the party.

His remarks come amid growing disagreements among opposition figures and coalition groups ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly over the emergence of new political platforms and alliance-building efforts.

The National Publicity Secretary of the proposed ADA had earlier criticised Ardo’s perceived hostility toward other opposition parties, accusing him of undermining broader coalition efforts.

Meanwhile, Senator Seriake Dickson, founder and national leader of the NDC, had previously accused Ardo of sponsoring what he described as a misleading campaign against the party.

Dickson, while defending the legitimacy of the NDC registration process, said documents in the party’s possession showed that its registration efforts began in 2017 before the process was temporarily halted.

“When party registration resumed last year, we revisited and updated our earlier application,” Dickson said.

He added that the party had documentary evidence, including records of its logo search and earlier correspondence linked to the registration exercise.

According to the former governor, political projects of national significance often attract distractions and opposition.

“These are all parts of the terrain that we are used to. I therefore urge Nigerians to discountenance and ignore such propaganda about the NDC or any of its leaders and remain focused on the bigger picture,” he said.

Hajj 2026: First batch of Lagos State pilgrims proceed to Makkah

LAGOS, Nigeria (NPA) — The first batch of 343 pilgrims from Lagos State has departed for the holy city of Makkah, continuing their spiritual journey for the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage. The pilgrims, filled with devotion and gratitude, left Madinah after four days of intense prayers and worship at the Prophet’s Mosque, marking a significant phase of their sacred exercise.

According to a statement from the Lagos State Government, the second and third batches of Lagos pilgrims, who arrived in Madinah on Sunday, have embarked on Ziyyarah — visits to some of the most revered historical sites in Islamic tradition. These visits, it noted, offered deep reflection on the sacrifices of early Muslims and provided spiritual enlightenment as the pilgrims prepared for the major Hajj rites in Makkah.

Among the notable sites visited were Masjid Quba, the first mosque built in Madinah; Mount Uhud, the site of the historic Battle of Uhud; Masjid Qiblatain, where the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was divinely directed to change the Qiblah from Jerusalem to Makkah; Jannatul Baqi, the resting place of many companions of the Prophet; and Sab’ah Masajid (The Seven Mosques), known for their connection to the Battle of the Trench.

The Lagos State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board expressed satisfaction with the smooth coordination of the pilgrimage so far, noting that all arrangements for accommodation, transportation, and welfare have been effectively managed. The Board reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that every pilgrim experiences a spiritually fulfilling and well‑organized Hajj.

  • Tinubu, Kagame deepen Nigeria–Rwanda cooperation, push AfCFTA agenda

Tinubu, Kagame deepen Nigeria–Rwanda cooperation, push AfCFTA agenda

KIGALI, Rwanda (NPA) — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and President Paul Kagame of Rwanda have agreed to strengthen bilateral relations and deepen economic cooperation between their countries, with renewed focus on trade, regional integration and the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The agreement was reached during a bilateral meeting at the Urugwiro Presidential Village in Kigali shortly after Tinubu arrived in Rwanda for the Africa CEO Forum.

According to a statement issued by the State House, both leaders resolved to reactivate mechanisms aimed at advancing Nigeria–Rwanda cooperation, particularly through the Joint Permanent Ministerial Commission (JPMC) established in 2021.

The two presidents agreed that Nigeria would host the next meeting of the commission as part of efforts to accelerate cooperation across strategic sectors.

Tinubu, who arrived in Kigali from Nairobi after participating in the Africa Forward Summit co-hosted by Kenyan President William Ruto and French President Emmanuel Macron, said African nations must embrace stronger economic partnerships driven by trade, investment and innovation.

“I arrived in Kigali this afternoon from Nairobi, where we joined other African leaders at the Africa Forward Summit co-hosted by President Ruto and President Macron to advance a new model of partnership built on trade, investment, innovation, infrastructure, and shared prosperity,” Tinubu stated.

The Nigerian leader thanked President Kagame for the warm reception and described their engagement as productive and forward-looking.

“I thank my brother, President Paul Kagame, for the warm reception upon my arrival in Kigali and for our productive bilateral engagement at the Urugwiro Presidential Village,” he said.

The discussions between both leaders focused significantly on expanding bilateral trade and improving logistics connectivity to support African businesses.

Tinubu disclosed that Nigeria was in the early stages of discussions with RwandAir on a practical flat-rate cargo arrangement aimed at helping Nigerian businesses transport goods more efficiently and predictably across African markets.

“Our discussions focused on expanding bilateral trade between our two countries. We are also in the early stages of discussions with RwandAir on a practical flat-rate arrangement that can help Nigerian businesses ship their goods more predictably across the continent,” he said.

The initiative follows Nigeria’s earlier establishment of an air cargo corridor with Uganda Airlines as part of efforts to facilitate intra-African trade and improve export opportunities for local businesses.

On consular relations, Tinubu said Nigeria would consider reciprocating Rwanda’s 30-day visa-free policy for Nigerians in line with the ideals of Pan-Africanism and continental integration.

The leaders also reviewed pending Memoranda of Understanding covering tourism, anti-corruption cooperation and the fight against illicit drug trafficking.

Both presidents reaffirmed their commitment to the AfCFTA and pledged continued collaboration to remove trade barriers, strengthen market access and expand digital trade across the continent.

“As champions of the AfCFTA, Nigeria and Rwanda will continue to work together to deepen digital trade, strengthen market access, and remove the barriers that limit African enterprise,” Tinubu stated.

The President further announced that Nigeria would host the AfCFTA Council of Ministers and Digital Trade Forum in June, while also preparing to host the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) and Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) events from Nov. 5 to Nov. 11, 2026, as well as another continental gathering in November 2027.

According to Tinubu, Africa’s future depends on stronger economic cooperation among African countries rather than dependence on external markets.

“From the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi to the Africa CEO Forum in Kigali, my message remains the same. Africa’s future will not be built by speeches alone. It will be built by trade, investment, innovation, and the courage to trust one another’s markets,” he said.

“This is the path to shared and sustainable prosperity for our people and the continent.”

Obasa made the announcement on Tuesday during a stakeholders’ meeting in Agege, ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries.

He urged members of the APC to remain united and committed as the party prepares for its primaries, stressing that internal cohesion was vital for victory.

Obasa also threw his support behind former Agege council chairman, Hon. • INEC records 106,074 new voter registrations in Nasarawa

INEC records 106,074 new voter registrations in Nasarawa

LAFIA, Nigeria (NPA) — The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it registered 106,074 new voters in Nasarawa State during the second phase of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Nasarawa State, Muhammad Abubakar-Sadiq, disclosed this on Monday in Lafia while briefing journalists on the commencement of the third phase of the CVR exercise.

According to him, the third phase of the registration exercise began on May 11 and is expected to end on July 10, 2026.

Abubakar-Sadiq explained that the commission recorded 37,323 new registrations during the first phase of the exercise conducted between August and December 2025.

He, however, said the figure rose significantly to 106,074 during the second phase conducted from January to April 2026.

The REC attributed the increase in voter turnout to heightened public awareness and the decentralisation of registration centres from the headquarters of the 13 local government areas and Lafia to the 147 electoral wards across the state.

He said eligible participants in the CVR exercise include Nigerians who recently attained the age of 18, new registrants, persons seeking transfer of voter registration, replacement of lost Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), and correction of personal information.

According to him, participation was particularly high in Karu, Obi, Lafia and Nasarawa local government areas.

“Karu recorded 16,492, while Obi, Lafia and Nasarawa LGAs recorded 14,030, 13,354 and 14,493 respectively for new registration,” he said.

Abubakar-Sadiq added that female registrants outnumbered their male counterparts during the exercise.

“Female registration stood at 59,538, while male registration was 46,536,” he added.

The REC commended residents of the state for turning out in large numbers and encouraged those yet to register to visit the nearest registration centre.

He also warned against multiple registrations, stating that duplicate entries would be detected and removed through the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS).

Abubakar-Sadiq further disclosed that INEC would soon display data from the previous phase for public scrutiny, claims and objections before final publication.

He noted that the commission encountered challenges including poor network connectivity, last-minute rush by registrants and geographical barriers during the previous exercise.

According to him, INEC has taken steps to address the identified challenges, including the procurement of routers for electoral officers across the state to improve network connectivity and ensure smoother operations.

The REC appreciated the media, traditional rulers, religious leaders and other stakeholders for their support during the exercise and called for sustained collaboration.

He also reminded the public that voter registration remains free of charge and warned that no INEC staff or agent is authorised to demand payment for any aspect of the process. (NAN).
