In a statement released on Saturday, 28 February 2026, under reference No. MFA/PR/2026/21 and signed by Ministry Spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the Federal Government emphasised that it is closely monitoring the volatile situation in the Middle East. The Ministry assured that it will continue to assess developments and provide updates as necessary. It reaffirmed that the safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens abroad remain a top priority of the Federal Government.

Nigeria called on all parties involved in the conflict to de-escalate tensions and return to negotiations in the interest of global peace and coexistence.

Bolivian Military Plane Crash Near La Paz Kills 20, Injures Dozens

LA PAZ, BOLIVIA — A Bolivian Air Force Hercules C-130 transport aircraft crashed on Friday evening while attempting to land at El Alto International Airport, leaving at least 20 people dead and more than 30 injured, according to local authorities.

The aircraft, reportedly carrying newly printed banknotes, skidded off the runway amid severe weather conditions and struck a busy highway before coming to rest in a nearby field. Police Colonel Rene Tambo, head of the homicide division in El Alto, said the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue.

Defence Minister Marcelo Salinas confirmed that firefighters quickly extinguished a fire at the crash site. He added that the cause of the accident remains under investigation. Witnesses described heavy hail and lightning at the time of the incident.

Footage circulating on social media showed chaotic scenes as crowds gathered around the wreckage. Some individuals attempted to collect banknotes scattered among debris and damaged vehicles. Security forces deployed water hoses and tear gas to disperse onlookers and prevent looting.

In a statement, the Ministry of Defence clarified that the banknotes had no serial numbers and therefore no legal value, warning that possession or use of them would constitute a crime.

Bolivian Air Force General Sergio Lora reported that two of the six crew members remain missing. The Central Bank of Bolivia is expected to provide further details regarding the aircraft’s cargo.

La Paz, situated at an altitude of 3,650 meters (11,975 feet) and surrounded by the Andes, is the world’s highest administrative capital — a challenging environment for aviation operations.

Breaking: Netanyahu Announces Operation “Lion’s Roar” Against Iran

JERUSALEM (NPA) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Saturday the launch of a joint military operation with the United States, aimed at countering what he described as “an existential threat posed by the regime in Iran.”

In a televised statement on February 28, Netanyahu said: “For 47 years, the Ayatollahs’ regime has chanted ‘Death to Israel, Death to America.’ It has spilled our blood, murdered many Americans, and massacred its own people. This murderous terrorist regime must not be allowed to arm itself with nuclear weapons that would enable it to threaten all of humanity.”

Netanyahu added that the operation, named “Lion’s Roar,” was intended to “create the conditions for the brave Iranian people to take their fate into their own hands.” He urged unity among Iran’s diverse communities, including Persians, Kurds, Azeris, Baloch, and Ahwazis, to “cast off the yoke of tyranny and bring freedom and peace-loving values to Iran.”

The prime minister also called on Israeli citizens to follow Home Front Command instructions during the operation. “In the coming days, during Operation ‘Lion’s Roar,’ we will all be called upon to show patience and strength of spirit. Together we will stand, together we will fight, and together we will ensure the eternity of Israel,” he said.

No immediate response has yet been issued by Iranian officials.

Further updates are expected as the situation develops.

UPDATED: Israel and U.S. Launch Strikes on Iran, Trump Confirms

JERUSALEM (NPA) — The Israeli military announced Saturday that it has carried out pre-emptive strikes against Iran, an operation confirmed by U.S. President Donald Trump. The move marks a significant escalation in regional tensions.

The strikes follow weeks of diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran aimed at resolving disputes over Iran’s nuclear enrichment program and its development of ballistic missiles. Negotiations sought to limit Iran’s nuclear activities and curb missile capabilities but ended without agreement.

According to the West Asia News Agency (WANA), loud explosions were reported in Tehran, with smoke rising over central districts. Early reports suggested the blasts may have been caused by missile strikes, with impacts noted near University Street and the Jomhouri district.

Several media outlets also reported that Israel’s Defense Minister announced the operation, describing it as a preemptive measure to eliminate threats against the country.

Analysts warn that retaliatory missile and drone attacks against Israel could follow. There are also expectations that Iran may respond by targeting Israeli territory and U.S. military bases in the region.

Israel’s Defense Minister, Israel Katz, has declared a nationwide state of emergency, urging citizens to follow Home Front Command instructions and remain in protected areas.

As of now, Iranian officials have not issued any public statements regarding the incident.

Further updates are expected as the situation develops.

  • White House Press Secretary Leavitt Highlights Trump Administration’s First-Year Achievements

White House Press Secretary Leavitt Highlights Trump Administration’s First-Year Achievements

LAGOS, NIGERIA (NPA)–White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has praised the performance of U.S. President Donald Trump, describing his first year in office as marked by “undeniable results.”

In a statement posted on X on Friday, Leavitt asserted that the United States now has “the most secure border in history,” citing the removal of tens of thousands of undocumented immigrants accused of violent crimes. She noted that this has contributed to the murder rate reaching “the lowest level in recorded history.”

Leavitt also pointed to economic indicators, clarifying that gas prices had fallen below $3 per gallon nationwide, mortgage rates dropped to four-year lows, and inflationary pressures were easing. “Mortgage rates fell below 6% this week for the first time in more than three years, welcome news for house hunters heading into the busy spring home-buying season,” she said.

Additional measures highlighted included tax reforms, such as exemptions on tips, overtime, and Social Security contributions, as well as lower prescription drug costs under the “Trump Rx” initiative. According to Leavitt, these policies have led to “a nearly $1,500 increase in real wages” and positioned American patients to pay “the lowest prices for prescription drugs anywhere in the world.”

On financial markets, she emphasized that “the stock market [is] breaking record after record” with “trillions of dollars in investments secured.”

Leavitt further claimed progress in foreign and social policy, stating that “eight global conflicts ended,” women’s and girls’ sports were “protected,” religious liberty was “respected once again,” and new trade deals were revitalizing U.S. manufacturing.

She criticized media outlets for allegedly failing to report these developments, framing it as part of a broader dispute between the administration and press organizations.

Independent data also points to several measurable outcomes during Trump’s second term. U.S. border apprehensions reportedly declined by more than 90%, while refugee admissions fell by nearly 98% compared to previous years. Crime statistics indicated a reduction in homicide rates. Economically, real weekly earnings for private-sector workers rose by 1.4%, outpacing inflation, while GDP grew at an estimated 1.8%. Growth was supported by increased domestic energy production, reinforcing U.S. energy independence.

In trade and investment, trillions of dollars in capital were reshored to the U.S., accompanied by new trade agreements aimed at strengthening manufacturing. These measures were associated with moderating inflation.

On foreign policy, the administration engaged in Middle East conflict resolution, including those involving Israel and Hamas, and sought to restrict Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs. However, the Iran issue remains unresolved, with diplomacy at times strained and edging toward military confrontation.

Zelenskyy Calls for Trilateral Meeting with U.S. and Russia in March to End War

KYIV, Ukraine (NPA) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed readiness for a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the United States and Russia aimed at ending the war.

Zelenskyy made the remarks following a meeting with Jared Kushner and U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Ukrainian leader said preparations were underway for discussions at the highest level.

“We need to finalize everything achieved so far to secure real security guarantees and prepare a meeting at the leaders’ level,” Zelenskyy said. “There is already greater readiness for the next trilateral format. We expect the format to take place in early March.”

He added that such a meeting could address key issues directly, noting that leadership-level engagement is particularly important when dealing with Russia.

“At the end of the day, leaders decide key issues, and when it comes to Russia — such a personalist regime — this is even more relevant than in other countries,” he said.

Zelenskyy also expressed gratitude to the United States for its continued commitment to finding a path toward peace.

Earlier, the Ukrainian president met with representatives of the international business community. Discussions focused on strengthening Ukraine’s energy resilience and preparations for the coming winter season.

“On March 1, all our local authorities will present an energy development plan for next winter,” Zelenskyy said. “It is important to do as much as possible over the next six months before the start of the heating season. The role of the private sector is key, and we are counting on joint projects.”

He said broader investment opportunities and private sector involvement in Ukraine’s reconstruction — including in the defense industry — were also discussed.

“Even during the war, after such a winter, our country continues to live,” Zelenskyy said. “We are open to partnership, to joint projects, and to investments that will support our people and our security. Thank you to everyone who invests in Ukraine’s resilience.”

US Igbo Veterans Wants America to Create a Safe Zone for Judeo-Christians, Call for Nigeria’s Restructuring

FLORIDA, U.S. (NPA) — The American Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID), a U.S.-based non-profit military organization composed of men and women of Igbo heritage who have served or are serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, has urged Washington to establish a sovereign safe zone for Judeo-Christians and to support the restructuring of Nigeria.

In a letter dated February 25, 2026, and signed by AVID President Chief Dr. Sylvester Onyia, the group argued that such a measure would enable persecuted Christians to live and worship freely, shielded from extremist violence. “This initiative aligns with America’s commitment to self-determination, religious liberty, and protecting vulnerable populations, representing a significant step toward addressing the ongoing genocide,” the letter stated.

The appeal was addressed to Representative Riley McGowan Moore, a member of a U.S. congressional committee tasked by President Donald Trump to investigate violence against Christians in Nigeria. AVID expressed gratitude for the committee’s findings, particularly its conclusion that “Nigeria is the deadliest place in the world to be a Christian.”

The group highlighted documentation of mass killings, kidnappings, and the destruction of churches and schools, stressing the urgency of decisive international action. It welcomed the committee’s recommendation for the repeal of Sharia codes and criminal anti-blasphemy laws in Nigeria, describing them as essential steps toward safeguarding religious freedom and human rights.

  • Ex-NNPC General Manager Sentenced in U.S. Over $2.1 Million Bribery Scheme

Ex-NNPC General Manager Sentenced in U.S. Over $2.1 Million Bribery Scheme

LOS ANGELES, U.S. (NPA): A U.S. District Court has sentenced Paulinus Iheanacho Okoronkwo, a 58-year-old Nigerian-American and former General Manager of the Upstream Division of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), to 87 months in prison for accepting $2.1 million in bribes from Addax Petroleum, a Switzerland-based subsidiary of Sinopec, China’s state-owned oil and gas conglomerate.

According to a court statement by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Central District of California, on Monday, 23 February 2026, obtained by Newpost Africa, Okoronkwo was convicted of corruption, money laundering, and tax fraud. He was also ordered to pay $923,824 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and to forfeit $1,039,997, representing the net proceeds from the sale of a home purchased with illicit funds.

Court documents revealed that in 2015, Okoronkwo facilitated Addax Petroleum’s oil drilling rights in Nigeria in exchange for bribes. He concealed the payments by channeling them through his law firm’s trust account (IOLTA), falsely declaring them as legal fees. He also misled auditors, dismissed executives who questioned the transactions, and used the funds for personal expenses, including the purchase of a car and a home.

In November 2017, Okoronkwo used part of the illicit proceeds to make down payments on a house in Valencia, California. His misconduct came under investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and IRS Criminal Investigation, with support from the Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs.

In January 2026, the State Bar of California suspended Okoronkwo’s law license, following the corruption probe that ultimately led to his prosecution and conviction.
