    Nigeria Senate Seeks Special Funding for Environment Ministry to Tackle Erosion, Flooding

    ABUJA, NIGERIA (Agency Report): The Senate has called for provision of special funding for Federal Ministry of Environment to tackle erosion, flooding and other environmental challenges across the country.

    Chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment, Sen. Olubiyi Fadeyi, made the call when the ministry officials appeared to defend the 2026 budget of the ministry on Thursday.

    Fadeyi said fund appropriated annually to the ministry and its agencies was ‘very inadequate’ to tackle the environmental issues.

    He listed the issues that required urgent attention to include: environmental management, erosion control, environmental health, forest protection and other forms of environmental degradation.

    Others are: pollution and drainage mitigation as well as coastal flood mitigation.

    He stressed the need for ensuring release of appropriated funds for the discharge of the mandates of the ministry.

    “We must focus on solutions that addresses oil pollution, control tools from the enforcement and clean-up technology and erosion control to protect our lands and the environment,” he said.

    The senator said that efforts should be intensified on coastal flood mitigation, shoreline protection, forestation, land reclamation processes, agriculture and land repair.

    He emphasised the importance of Nigeria meeting its environmental obligations and commitments to climate-related organisations.

    “Doing so will unlock international climate finance and strengthen our global partnerships.

    “This committee remains committed to ensuring transparency, accountability and impact-raising budgets so that together, we can deliver a cleaner, safer and more resilient Nigeria.

    “This committee shall discharge its constitutional mandate for oversights and ensure that all forests are protected and released to respect climate-related guidelines,” he said.

    The Minister of Environment, Mr Balarabe Lawal, said that the ministry had the responsibility to care and ensure quality environment for good health and wellbeing of cities and promote sustainable use of natural resources.

    Lawal said that the structure of the 2026 budget proposal was anchored on the needs of the people, agenda of the present administration and the national development plan.

    According to him, it aligns with priority areas of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, including unlocking energy for sustainable development and boosting agriculture to achieve food security, among others.

    He said that the ministry was working to address fundamental issues that affect the nation’s forests, saying that the ministry was still expecting release of funds for some of its capital projects.

    The National Assembly Committee on Defence, Intelligence and Foreign Relations assessed her competencies, qualifications, and experience, as well as her ability to advance Kenya’s interests in global environmental diplomacy. The 75-year-old pledged to champion equitable climate financing, strengthen international cooperation, and amplify African voices in shaping global environmental policy. She also outlined plans to diversify funding streams by engaging the private sector and philanthropic partners to sustain UNEP programmes amid declining donor support.

    Raila Odinga, one of Kenya’s most influential political figures, served as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 and contested the presidency multiple times between 1997 and 2022. He was widely recognized for his role in advancing constitutional reforms, multiparty democracy, and infrastructure development across Africa, including his tenure as the African Union’s High Representative for Infrastructure Development.

    Odinga passed away on October 15, 2025, at the age of 80 in Kerala, India, after suffering a heart attack, according to agency reports.

    KANO, NIGERIA — The Federal Government has announced plans to establish fire stations in all 109 senatorial districts across the country as part of efforts to mitigate fire disasters and strengthen emergency response.

    Controller General of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), Dr Olumode Samuel-Adeyemi, disclosed this during an on-the-spot assessment of the Singer Market in Kano State, following the February 14 fire incident.

    Samuel-Adeyemi said a dedicated fire post would be established at Singer Market to curb recurring outbreaks. He conveyed the condolences of the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, to the government and people of Kano State, particularly traders who lost lives and property worth billions of naira.

    Strengthening Response and Prevention

    The CG explained that the initiative is part of a broader plan to:

    • Expand fire coverage nationwide through senatorial and local government fire stations.
    • Construct water reservoirs in major markets to ensure quick access to water during emergencies.
    • Collaborate with the Nigeria Police Force and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps for crowd control during incidents.
    • Intensify public education and inspections through the Inspectorate and Enforcement Unit to enforce compliance with fire safety standards.

    He identified faulty electrical wiring, unsafe fuel storage, cooking inside shops, use of generators, lithium battery installations, and unattended appliances as major causes of market fires.

    Samuel-Adeyemi also noted that although firefighters arrived at Singer Market within 20 minutes, access was delayed due to obstructed roads. He appealed to Nigerians to give right of way to fire trucks during emergencies.

    Legislative Backing

    The CG added that the proposed amendment of the Fire Service Act would strengthen enforcement powers, including the authority to seal premises that fail to install required fire safety equipment.

    He commended the Kano State Fire Service and other emergency agencies for their cooperation and assured continued federal support in equipment and training.

    On continental integration, Youssouf highlighted the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a cornerstone for economic transformation. He called for innovative financing mechanisms and greater involvement of specialized agencies, the private sector, civil society, and philanthropic foundations. “More than ever, the continent needs to capitalize on its instruments to boost the momentum of development and integration, reflecting on innovative sources of financing and involving all actors, however marginal they may seem,” he said.

    According to the Council, the 48th Ordinary Session reaffirms the AU’s commitment to strengthening governance, advancing peace and security, and accelerating the implementation of Africa’s shared development agenda under Agenda 2063.

    Siama, 17, from South Sudan, missed two weeks of school in April when temperatures surged to 45 degrees Celsius (113 Fahrenheit).

    “Our country is a developing country so we do not have climate-resilient buildings … and do not have ACs in school,” she said.

    More than 40 million children were kept out of classrooms this year, from Asia to Africa, due to extreme heat, which scientists say has been made worse and more frequent by climate change.

    Naomi, 14, also struggled with South Sudan’s school closures. “This really affected me because this year I am sitting for my national exams,” she said.

    At home, “we were not able to concentrate because it was hot, the temperatures were really high, you have to focus more on reducing the temperature of your body by going to bathe every two hours”.

    In Somalia, Nafiso, 16, often can’t sleep at night, thinking about her future under climate change.

    “My father – he is a farmer. When there is a lot of heat, it becomes a lot of drought. When there is a lot of rain, it is difficult to get the food.”

    Sometimes she does not have enough food to eat three times a day.

    Floods, too, have at times prevented her from getting to school.

    “This is really making us worried how will the future be if there is no action being taken, if there is no climate finance to create climate-resilient schools in the country,” Naomi said.
