IPOB says ESN operatives will continue operations against security threats in Nigeria’s Southeast

INTERNATIONAL (NPA) — The proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra has declared that its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), would continue operations across communities in the Southeast which it claims are threatened by armed groups and criminal elements.

In a press statement dated April 30, 2026, and signed by Mazi Chikadibia Ezeoziem, the group accused Fulani herdsmen, jihadist groups and other armed actors of posing what it described as an existential threat to communities in the region. The group further alleged that the Nigerian government and security agencies had failed to adequately protect lives and property in the Southeast.

IPOB also accused political leaders, governors, traditional rulers and community leaders in the region of abandoning their responsibilities to safeguard local communities from insecurity.

According to the statement, the Directorate of State of IPOB said it derived its mandate from what it described as the Biafran people and therefore possessed the authority to deploy ESN operatives to communities facing security threats.

The separatist movement stated that it would not seek approval from politicians, traditional rulers or community leaders before deploying ESN operatives to areas it considered vulnerable.

The group also claimed that its intelligence units were monitoring alleged threats from armed groups and gathering information for what it described as proactive security operations.

IPOB further alleged that some individuals within communities in the Southeast were collaborating with the Nigerian state and external armed actors to destabilize the region.

“The DOS want to assure them that we have unassailable intelligence on who they are and their activities of sabotaging ESN operations and betrayal of our land,” the statement said.

The organization, which is headquartered in Germany, remains proscribed by the Nigerian government. Its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, was convicted by a Nigerian court on charges related to terrorism-linked offences, unlawful broadcasting and incitement under Nigeria’s Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act and the Criminal Code. His legal proceedings, however, have continued to generate political and legal debate within and outside Nigeria.

ABEOKUTA, Nigeria (NPA) — Operatives of the SWAT unit, Ogun State Police Command, have arrested two suspected cattle rustlers and recovered a stolen cow valued at ₦1.7 million, alongside a knife and an operational vehicle used in the crime.

According to a statement issued by DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, Police Public Relations Officer, the incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, April 30, 2026, at about 2:30 a.m., when rustlers invaded a dairy farm at Omitoro Village via Coker, Ifo/Ibogun axis and stole a cow.

Police said the suspects, identified as Muhammed Monsur and Olaseinde Olatunji, attempted to flee in a mini bus, popularly known as Korope, but were intercepted following a distress call and alarm raised by locals. The prompt intervention led to their arrest, while two other accomplices escaped into the surrounding bush.

Recovered exhibits include the stolen cow, a knife, and the operational mini bus. The cow was photographed for evidential purposes and later released to its owner after receiving necessary attention. The vehicle has been secured at the Ibogun SWAT office.

JUST IN: Gombe Police debunk viral claim of arson attack on Nafiu Bala’s residence after ADC Supreme Court ruling

ABUJA, Nigeria (NPA) — The Gombe State Police Command has dismissed as false reports circulating on social media alleging that the residence of Mr. Nafiu Bala was set ablaze in Gombe State.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, the police said no such incident had been recorded anywhere in the state.

“The Command confirms that the report is false, as no such incident has been recorded anywhere in the State,” the statement said.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Umar Ahmed Chuso, urged members of the public to disregard what the command described as misinformation designed to mislead the public.

The police reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and security across Gombe State and warned against the spread of unverified information capable of creating tension.

The viral images and claims surfaced on social media hours after the Supreme Court of Nigeria restored the leadership structure of the African Democratic Congress led by former Senate President David Mark.

The apex court had set aside an earlier order of the Court of Appeal directing parties in the dispute to maintain the status quo ante bellum.

In its judgment, delivered by Justice Mohammed Garba, the Supreme Court held that the preservative order issued by the appellate court was unnecessary and improper because the appeal had already been dismissed.

The court ruled that there was effectively “nothing left” for the appellate court to preserve, consequently vacating the directive and returning the substantive leadership dispute to the Federal High Court for determination on its merits.

The ruling effectively restored the David Mark-led leadership structure of the ADC, including former Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola, who currently serves as the party’s National Secretary, pending the outcome of the substantive suit.

Supreme Court restores David Mark‑led ADC leadership as Atiku, party hail ruling

ABUJA, Nigeria (NPA) — The Supreme Court of Nigeria on Thursday restored the leadership structure of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by former Senate President David Mark, after setting aside an earlier order of the Court of Appeal directing parties to maintain the status quo ante bellum.

In its ruling, the apex court held that the preservative order issued by the lower court was unnecessary and improper, especially after the appeal before it had already been dismissed. Delivering judgment, Justice Mohammed Garba stated that there was effectively “nothing left” for the appellate court to preserve at the time the order was made.

The Supreme Court consequently vacated the directive and ordered that the substantive leadership dispute be returned to the Federal High Court for hearing on its merits. The ruling effectively restores the David Mark‑led structure, including former Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola, who serves as National Secretary, pending the outcome of the substantive suit.

The court emphasized that preservative or status quo orders can only be issued where a valid subject matter requires protection. “Giving such an order in an appeal it had already dismissed was unnecessary, unwarranted and improper,” it held.

The decision carries significant implications for the ADC’s internal leadership contest ahead of political realignments and preparations for the 2027 general elections. The crisis had triggered legal battles among rival factions over control of the party’s national structure.

As of press time, the certified true copy of the judgment had not yet been released. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar welcomed the ruling, describing it as a firm affirmation of David Mark’s leadership, while warning against complacency. He urged supporters to remain vigilant, stressing that “eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.”

The ADC also congratulated members nationwide, calling the judgment a clear affirmation of its legitimacy under Senator Mark and Ogbeni Aregbesola. The party commended the unanimous five‑man panel of the Supreme Court, while warning that attempts to weaken opposition voices persist. It vowed to remain resolute in its mission to provide Nigerians with a credible alternative and urged members and supporters to stay vigilant.

According to the governor, the security architecture introduced by his administration is the first of its kind in Nigeria and is designed to provide sustainable, technology-driven policing and rapid emergency response capabilities.

In a broadcast reviewed by our correspondent, Mbah outlined his administration’s security achievements, noting that the state has deployed more than 150 distress‑response squad vehicles and established a Command‑and‑Control Centre with round‑the‑clock surveillance of identified hotspots across Enugu State. He emphasized that the scale of these measures is unmatched by any other state.

He added that security agencies operating within the state had also been equipped with modern communication gadgets to improve coordination and operational efficiency.

The governor further revealed that security operatives in the state had been fitted with body cameras — a development he described as the first by any state government in Nigeria — to promote accountability and ensure that security operations are conducted within the confines of the law.

“We have spared no effort in building a security network that is fit for purpose, so that Ndi Enugu and businesses can feel safe, protected and confident,” Mbah said.

Political and economic analysts have praised the governor, who campaigned under the “Tomorrow is Here” mantra, for what they described as responsible and responsive leadership focused on economic transformation and institutional reforms.

Mbah’s broader economic vision is aimed at transforming Enugu into a major hub for business, tourism and quality living, with a target of increasing the state’s Gross Domestic Product from $4.4 billion to at least $30 billion within the next four to eight years.

Since assuming office, the governor has pursued a series of ambitious projects, including the Enugu Air initiative, Smart Green Schools, innovation and technology hubs, rural road construction and urban renewal programmes aimed at stimulating sustainable economic growth.

In the first quarter of 2026, the Enugu State Government inaugurated the Enugu Haier Factory, a $20 million Foreign Direct Investment project by Haier Global Business Group in partnership with the state government.

The factory, located in Enugu, is expected to position the state as a production hub for smartphones, tablets, computers, smart boards, Android televisions, education and health technologies, as well as renewable energy solutions.

Under the arrangement, the state government provided land for the facility and is expected to serve as its largest customer through the purchase of 25,000 all-in-one desktop computers and 300,000 tablets for deployment across the state’s 260 Smart Green Schools.

Mbah described the investment as a major milestone in his administration’s efforts to reposition Enugu as a preferred destination for industry, technology and innovation-driven growth.

Vice President of Haier Group, Sun Yongle, said the facility will initially produce about 200,000 units annually across ICT, medical equipment, and renewable energy product lines, with plans to expand the workforce to more than 200 employees.
