BREAKING: Peter Obi calls for Tinubu’s resignation over “monumental failure in governance”

ABUJA, Nigeria (NPA) — Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign, citing what he described as “monumental failure in governance.” Obi said his demand mirrors Tinubu’s own 2015 call for then‑President Goodluck Jonathan to step down over economic hardship, insecurity, and the Chibok school kidnapping.

In a statement personally issued on Monday titled “Owning Up to Leadership Failures and Political Responsibility”, Obi linked his call to the resignation announcement of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who stepped aside amid public frustration over economic stagnation, rising living costs, and unmet campaign pledges.

Obi noted that Tinubu, during the 2023 campaign, promised improved electricity supply, stronger anti‑corruption measures, and better welfare for Nigerians, even challenging voters not to re‑elect him if he failed to deliver. “At present, however, these conditions have worsened. Electricity remains unreliable, insecurity has intensified, kidnappings are rampant, and economic hardship has deepened,” he said.

The former Anambra State Governor stressed that Nigeria is “in the worst possible condition,” with regression across critical sectors including security, infrastructure, transportation, and anti‑corruption. He argued that Tinubu’s resignation would help entrench accountability, restore public trust, and send a clear message that public office is a sacred trust, not an entitlement.

“I therefore join Nigerians of goodwill in calling for the resignation of the President over monumental failure in governance. Only by ending the culture of impunity can we secure a better future for our children in a New Nigeria that is possible,” Obi declared.
