Atiku criticises NBC directive on Broadcast Code ahead of 2027 elections, warns of media clampdown

ABUJA, Nigeria (NPA) — Former Vice President and presidential aspirant, Atiku Abubakar, has criticised the recent directive issued to broadcasters by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) over alleged breaches of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code ahead of the 2027 elections.

The commission had raised concerns over what it described as growing violations in news, current affairs and political programmes, noting that broadcast platforms are increasingly deviating from their core responsibility of informing the public with accuracy, balance and professionalism.

It vowed to enforce strict compliance with the provisions of the Broadcasting Code, particularly on fairness, accuracy, balance, hate speech, incitement and respect for constitutional institutions.

However, in a sharp reaction, Atiku described the NBC’s advisory as a troubling attempt to muzzle the media and shrink the space for free expression in the country.

He noted that Nigeria’s media industry has evolved into a formidable institution, respected globally for its resilience and professionalism.

Atiku expressed concern that the NBC often resorts to what he termed heavy-handed directives whenever elections approach, arguing that such actions tend to silence dissent rather than promote ethical journalism.

He said he would stand firmly with Nigeria’s broadcast industry and other media platforms to resist what he described as “creeping censorship,” stressing that ethical standards should not be selectively enforced during election periods.

“The timing and tone of these regulations expose a deeper agenda. It signals a government more interested in controlling narratives than permitting a free, fair and transparent electoral process,” he said.

Uzodimma hosts ANPA for dinner, seeks stronger healthcare partnership in Imo

OWERRI, Nigeria (NPA) — Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, on Saturday hosted members of the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA) to a dinner at the Banquet Hall of Government House in appreciation of their free medical intervention programme in the state.

In a statement, the governor said his administration places a high value on the lives of citizens, stressing that the state must go beyond social commitment to building purposeful partnerships with global organisations such as ANPA and dedicated volunteers to ensure free access to quality healthcare services.

Uzodimma praised members of ANPA for their strong commitment, demonstrated through sustained medical outreach that has positively impacted many lives.

He also urged the association to go beyond service delivery by supporting capacity building and deliberate knowledge transfer to resident healthcare personnel, particularly in strengthening their proficiency in operating modern medical equipment procured by the state to enhance healthcare delivery across its facilities.

The Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA) is an educational, scientific and charitable organisation representing the professional interests of more than 4,000 physicians, dentists and allied health professionals of Nigerian origin or affiliation in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. It provides a platform for medical and scientific dialogue on health issues affecting populations of Nigerian descent across North America, the Caribbean and Africa.

The organisation has, over the years, conducted free medical missions in various communities, with its latest outreach held in Abia and Imo states in southeastern Nigeria.

The climax of the four-day Imo–ANPA Medical Mission 2026, which covered the three geopolitical zones of the state, was a dinner hosted by the governor. The event served as a token of appreciation by the state government for the group’s selfless service, the hope they restored, the faith they renewed among the people, and the improved well-being of the many beneficiaries reached through the intervention.

U.S. envoy meets Libyan PM at Antalya Forum, pushes for unity and elections

ANTALYA, Turkey (NPA) — The United States Senior Adviser for Arab and African Affairs, Massad Boulos, has met with Libyan Prime Minister, Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum in Antalya.

The meeting, held at the NEST Congress and Fair Center in Belek, focused on ongoing efforts to stabilise and unify Libya following years of political division. Boulos noted that both parties underscored the significance of the recent signing of a unified national budget on 11 April, as well as the launch of Exercise Flintlock on 14 April, which involved joint participation by eastern and western Libyan special forces.

According to the U.S. envoy, the developments represent key steps toward national reconciliation and institutional unity after prolonged tensions among rival political factions and armed groups. He said both sides explored ways to build on the progress made through economic and military integration.

Discussions also centred on how the United States can support Libya’s path toward the unification of state institutions, culminating in the conduct of credible national elections aimed at restoring stability and governance in the country.

Boulos reiterated Washington’s position in favour of a peaceful, stable, and unified Libya, capable of driving economic growth and expanding opportunities for its citizens and international partners.

  • NBC warns broadcasters over Code violations ahead of 2027 elections

NBC warns broadcasters over Code violations ahead of 2027 elections

ABUJA, Nigeria (NPA) — The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has issued a formal notice to broadcasters across Africa’s most populous country over rising breaches of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code in news, current affairs, and political programmes.

The directive, released by the Office of the Director-General through the Public Affairs Department, followed what the regulator described as a sustained increase in violations of the 6th Edition of the Code. The Commission said broadcast platforms are increasingly being used in ways that depart from their core obligation to inform the public with accuracy, balance, and professionalism.

The NBC warned that as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, it will enforce strict and uncompromising compliance with all provisions of the Code, particularly those relating to fairness, accuracy, balance, hate speech, incitement, and respect for constitutional institutions.

Highlighting key concerns, the Commission pointed to what it described as a growing crisis in anchor and presenter professionalism. It said there has been a noticeable departure from ethical standards, including instances where presenters express personal opinions as facts, fail to provide balanced perspectives, or allow inflammatory content during broadcasts.

The regulator also raised alarm over the misuse of broadcast platforms by political actors, noting an increase in content that promotes divisive narratives, incitement, and disrespect for national unity. It stressed that such practices violate provisions prohibiting hate speech, subversion of constituted authority, and content capable of inciting public disorder.

According to the Commission, broadcasters are expected to ensure that all sides to issues of public interest are equitably presented, preferably within the same programme, while maintaining professionalism in the coverage of sensitive topics such as politics, communal conflicts, and national security.

The NBC further stated that any anchor or presenter found to have expressed personal opinions as facts, bullied or intimidated guests, denied fair hearing to opposing views, or otherwise compromised neutrality will be deemed to have committed a Class B breach under the Code. The Commission reiterated its commitment to upholding broadcast standards and warned that violations will attract appropriate sanctions as the country prepares for a critical electoral cycle.

Bobi Wine wins award in U.S., raises alarm over arrests, forced disappearances in Uganda

ABUJA, Nigeria — 18 April 2026 (NPA) — Ugandan opposition leader and former presidential candidate, Bobi Wine, has been recognised as a Leader in Courage and Innovation (2026) by the Renew Democracy Initiative in New York City.

Now in exile in the United States, the politician dedicated the award to Ugandans who, he said, have been killed, unlawfully detained, or forcibly disappeared in the struggle for a better nation. He noted that their sacrifices would not be in vain.

Bobi Wine also acknowledged fellow honourees, including former U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton; Chrystia Freeland, economic adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and former Deputy Prime Minister of Canada; and U.S. Senator Mark Kelly, a former NASA astronaut, commending their contributions to democratic causes. “Uganda shall be free,” he said.

Meanwhile, the opposition figure condemned what he described as the unlawful detention of Fauzia Natabi, the wife of his personal assistant.

According to him, Natabi was held incommunicado for over 35 days after her alleged abduction before being presented at the Chief Magistrate Court in Kanyanya, where she was charged and remanded to Kasangati Prison. He described the charge—allegedly threatening a stranger via phone—as “laughable,” noting that it came shortly after authorities denied having her in custody.

Bobi Wine further raised concern over the disappearance of another activist, identified as “Gen. Blue Tick,” who was reportedly abducted on 9 April while heading to a vigil in Mutungo. He said her whereabouts remain unknown, with authorities yet to provide any explanation.

He argued that the incidents reflect a broader pattern of abductions and official denials aimed at silencing opposition voices.

“We must never give up the fight until we are all free,” he said, reiterating calls for the release of political detainees and the return of missing persons.

₦34 trillion missing: Peter Obi raises alarm over massive revenue leak in Nigeria

ABUJA, Nigeria — 18 April 2026 (NPA) — African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential aspirant, Mr. Peter Obi, has raised concerns over a recent World Bank report indicating that, while Nigeria’s federation revenue surged to ₦84 trillion within three years, a staggering 41%—amounting to ₦34.44 trillion—was not remitted to the Federation Account.

In a statement issued on Saturday titled “Nigeria Is Bleeding From Within,” Obi noted that the missing sum exceeds the combined ₦34 trillion allocated to capital projects in the 2024 and 2025 Appropriation Acts. He said the comparison underscores the gravity of the situation and suggests deep systemic failure.

The former Anambra State governor described the development not as an oversight, but as evidence of institutionalised corruption on a massive scale.

Recalling the 1994 Okigbo Panel report, which revealed that $12.4 billion from the Gulf War oil windfall was unaccounted for, Obi said Nigerians reacted with widespread outrage at the time. “Today, an even more troubling situation appears to be unfolding, yet it is met with disquieting silence,” he stated.

He described the situation as a “lethal paradox” in which the nation earns more revenue but has less to invest in critical sectors such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure. Since 2025, he noted, systemic deductions have enabled agencies to retain more resources than entire states and key ministries.

Obi said the persistent leakages help explain why countries with fewer resources continue to outperform Nigeria across major development indices. He questioned how meaningful progress can be made in power, education, healthcare, and infrastructure under such conditions.

“Nigeria has no business being poor,” he said. “We must halt these leakages through disciplined and transparent leadership driven by character. It is time to redirect our hijacked resources back to the people and position Nigeria among developed nations.”

The statement concluded: “With our collective resolve to change this corruption-infested system, a New Nigeria is possible.” —PO

  • Obi condemns abduction of UTME candidates in Benue, blames leadership failure

Obi condemns abduction of UTME candidates in Benue, blames leadership failure

ABUJA — 18 April 2026 (NPA) — Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has condemned the abduction of candidates sitting the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in Benue State, describing the incident as “utterly heartbreaking” and a reflection of worsening insecurity in the country.

In a statement issued on Friday, Obi, a leading figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and a presidential aspirant for the 2027 elections, said young Nigerians seeking education were increasingly being exposed to violence. He noted that the country already has a low proportion of tertiary graduates — about one per cent — compared with countries such as Indonesia and South Africa.

He described the incident as unacceptable, stressing that Nigeria cannot afford to lose more students to insecurity.

Obi criticised authorities responsible for security, accusing them of focusing more on electoral ambitions than on protecting citizens. He said the same level of coordination allegedly used to project political strength should instead be directed towards securing roads, preventing attacks and rescuing abducted students.

The former presidential candidate, known for his “A New Nigeria is Possible” mantra, further described the incident as part of a broader pattern of insecurity, warning that it represents a national crisis requiring urgent and decisive action.

He added that the situation demands leadership commensurate with the scale of the challenge, rather than silence or inaction, warning that a nation that fails to protect its youth risks jeopardising its future.

ABUJA, Nigeria — 18 April 2026 (NPA) — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assented to the 2026 Appropriation Act, approving a total expenditure of ₦68.32 trillion, while also signing legislation to extend the implementation of the 2025 budget’s capital component to 30 June 2026.

The newly signed budget provides for ₦4.799 trillion in statutory transfers, ₦15.8 trillion for debt servicing, and ₦15.4 trillion for recurrent expenditure. A further ₦32.2 trillion has been allocated to the Development Fund for capital expenditure, representing roughly half of the total budget and signalling a strong focus on infrastructure and long-term growth.

According to a statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the allocations are designed to balance statutory obligations, debt commitments and operational costs with investments aimed at boosting productivity and improving living standards.

The President also signed the Appropriation (Repeal and Enactment) (Amendment) Act, 2026, which extends the capital spending timeline under the 2025 budget from 31 March to 30 June 2026. The extension is intended to allow for the completion of key infrastructure and development projects already at advanced stages.

The presidency said the additional time would enable Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to consolidate ongoing work, improve project delivery rates and ensure more effective use of public funds.

With the 2026 budget taking effect from 1 April, the Federal Government is set to begin full implementation in line with its Renewed Hope Agenda. President Tinubu directed MDAs to ensure disciplined, transparent and efficient use of resources, with emphasis on value for money and timely execution of projects.

He also commended the National Assembly of Nigeria for what he described as its diligence and cooperation in the swift passage of the budget, stressing the importance of continued collaboration between the executive and legislative arms of government.

The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fiscal reforms, improved revenue generation and targeted investments aimed at stimulating economic growth, creating jobs and strengthening social protection programmes.
