    Peter Obi condoles with former INEC Chairman Jega over wife’s passing

    ABUJA, April 6, 2026 (NPA) — Peter Obi, a chieftain of Nigeria’s leading opposition party, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has commiserated with former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, following the passing of his wife, Hajiya Hadiza Attahiru Jega.

    In a statement today, Obi wrote: “I express my deepest condolences to Professor Attahiru Jega and the entire Jega family on the profound loss of his beloved wife, Hajiya Hadiza Attahiru Jega.”

    The presidential hopeful prayed that Almighty Allah grant her Al-Jannatul Firdaus, overlook her shortcomings, and envelop her soul in His mercy.

    He also prayed that Allah provides Professor Jega, their children, and the entire family with the fortitude and strength to bear this sad and irreplaceable loss. 

    The deceased has since been buried according to Islamic rites on April 5, 2026.

    CALABAR, NIGERIA, April 6, 2026 (NPA) — The Cross River State Police Command has announced that a yet-to-be-identified child was found on Monday, April 6, 2026, at about 08:30 hours within the premises of St. Bernard Catholic Church in the Akim area of the state.

    According to a statement issued by ASP Eitokpah Sunday, Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, the child was discovered wandering inside the church compound by a security guard, who subsequently brought him to the police. Efforts to obtain useful information from the child were unsuccessful, as he could not provide his name, address, or details of his parents or guardians.

    Preliminary findings suggest that the child may have either been abandoned or lost his way.

    “The child is currently in protective custody at Akim Police Station, where adequate care and safety measures have been put in place pending identification,” the police said.

    The Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, particularly vulnerable members of society. It appealed to members of the public who may have information about any missing child, or who can assist in identifying the child or locating his parents or guardians, to report to Akim Police Station or contact the following numbers:

    NNEWI, NIGERIA, April 6, 2026 (NPA) — The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has achieved another milestone in its fight against vehicle-related crimes with the recovery of a stolen Toyota Corolla in Nnewi, Anambra State. The breakthrough was made possible through the National Vehicle Identification Scheme (NVIS), underscoring the Corps’ growing reliance on technology to enhance national security.

    The incident occurred on April 4, 2026, when an attempt was made to process proof of ownership documents at the NVIS Desk Office. During verification, the chassis number presented raised suspicion. Acting on professional instinct, the NVIS Officer requested a physical inspection of the vehicle. A deeper check revealed discrepancies in the database, exposing the car’s true identity and linking it to its rightful owner, Mr. Onyechi Dickson Eze of Awka. Eze confirmed that the vehicle had been forcefully taken from him during a kidnapping incident on January 23, 2023.

    Following the discovery, the Nigeria Police Force Area Command, Nnewi, and the State Criminal Investigation Bureau (SCIB) were immediately notified. A coordinated operation involving FRSC, the Police, and the Motor Licensing Authority (MLA) Ojoto led to the arrest of both the applicant and the agent who facilitated fraudulent documentation. The vehicle was recovered at 1654HRS and is now in police custody for further investigation.

    Preliminary findings revealed deliberate modifications intended to conceal the car’s identity. Its original red color had been changed to gray, and an unassigned number plate (NZM135AQ) was affixed. Despite these alterations, the NVIS platform successfully uncovered the vehicle’s true details.

    This recovery highlights the critical role of NVIS in tracing stolen vehicles, deterring fraud, and reinforcing public safety. The FRSC reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, due diligence, and collaboration with law enforcement agencies, urging citizens to verify documentation before purchasing vehicles.

    ABUJA, NIGERIA, April 5, 2026 (NPA) — Amnesty International Nigeria has reported that armed men raided the villages of Kurfa Danya and Kurfan Magaji in Zamfara State, northwest Nigeria, abducting about 150 people on Thursday. According to the rights group, most of the victims were women and children.

    In a statement issued Sunday, Amnesty quoted villagers who described living in fear, constantly bracing for attacks. “This is Nigeria’s forgotten conflict,” the organization noted, criticizing authorities for failing to stem the mounting death toll and recurring mass abductions despite repeated assurances of action.

    Zamfara State has long suffered from terrorist violence, with communities repeatedly displaced. Illegal mining has been cited as one of the drivers fueling insecurity in the region.

    Separately, Amnesty called on Nigerian authorities to investigate the killing of a 14-year-old secondary school student in Maiduguri on Saturday, April 4. The girl was struck by a stray bullet allegedly fired by military personnel during celebratory gunfire at a nearby wedding.

    A friend of the victim recounted that she had just finished applying henna with her mother, joyfully preparing for a family wedding, when tragedy struck. The teenager, who lived with her family at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital quarters, was buried Sunday morning at Maiduguri graveyard.

    DUTSE, NIGERIA, April 5, 2026 (NPA) — The Jigawa State Police Command has confirmed investigations into a tragic incident in Kazaure Local Government Area, where a 60-year-old man was allegedly set ablaze by his son at Lokon Malamai, Magama Quarters. Preliminary findings suggest petrol was poured on the victim before he was ignited, and police have launched surveillance and investigative measures to establish the full circumstances.

    SP Shiisu Lawan Adam, Police Public Relations Officer, said in a statement issued Sunday: “Preliminary investigations revealed that, on the same date at about 0600hrs, an unidentified person poured a reasonable quantity of a flammable item, suspected to be petrol, on the victim’s body and set him ablaze.

    In-depth surveillance and investigation led to the arrest of one Kabiru Nuhu ‘m’ age 27yrs of the same address, who happened to be the biological son of the victim with several fresh fire burns and wounds on his forehead, arms, and toes.”

    Adam explained that the victim was rushed to the hospital and later referred to a higher medical center for intensive treatment, but sadly succumbed to his injuries.

    He noted that the suspect is in custody and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Dutse, for discreet investigation and prosecution. Commissioner of Police, CP Haruna Alaba Yahaya, condemned the act in strong terms, assuring the public that justice will be served. He urged residents to resolve disputes peacefully, report domestic violence, and cooperate with police as investigations continue.

    In a statement issued by Mukaila Sanusi, Director of Public Affairs, LAWMA, the agency’s Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said waste evacuation arrangements had been reinforced with additional monitoring and operational support to ensure prompt service delivery during the festive period.

    He noted that festive seasons typically generate higher volumes of waste, stressing the need for both service providers and residents to play their roles in maintaining a clean environment. Gbadegesin encouraged households to embrace simple waste reduction habits such as avoiding unnecessary purchases, reusing materials, and separating recyclables from general waste.
