Funso Doherty welcomes rescue of Oyo schoolchildren, calls for greater protection of schools

LAGOS, Nigeria (NPA) — The Lagos State governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Funso Doherty, has welcomed the rescue of the schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oyo State, describing their return after 56 days in captivity as a triumph of hope and resilience.

The victims were rescued on Friday following a coordinated security operation that ended weeks of uncertainty after their abduction by suspected terrorists in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

In a statement on Saturday, Doherty expressed gratitude over the successful rescue and joined Governor Seyi Makinde, the people of Oyo State and Nigerians in celebrating the victims’ safe return.

“Today, my heart is filled with gratitude as I join Governor Seyi Makinde, the people of Oyo State and Nigerians everywhere in welcoming our teachers and children back home from captivity. Their return is a reminder that hope can prevail even in our darkest moments,” he said.

While celebrating the development, Doherty extended his condolences to families who lost loved ones during the ordeal, particularly the family of Michael Oyedokun.

“We remember those who lost their lives during this painful ordeal and pray for the peaceful repose of their souls. My deepest condolences go especially to the family of Michael Oyedokun. May God grant you the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” he said.

He commended the security agencies, community leaders, volunteers and everyone whose efforts contributed to the successful rescue operation.

“Your courage, persistence and sacrifice have brought relief to countless families,” he added.

Doherty, however, noted that the rescue marks only the beginning of the victims’ recovery, stressing that the rescued children, their teachers and their families would require sustained emotional and psychological support.

He called on governments and relevant stakeholders to provide the necessary care and resources to help the victims rebuild their lives.

Doherty also urged authorities to strengthen security around schools and communities to prevent similar incidents, saying no parent should have to fear sending a child to school.

“We must remain committed to building a Nigeria where no parent lives in fear of sending a child to school and no community has to endure such pain again. We owe that to every family and to every Nigerian,” he said.
