First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu commissions nursing quarters, mega schools in Borno

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (NPA) — Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Monday commissioned newly constructed nursing quarters and two mega primary schools in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
The projects, executed by Governor Babagana Umara Zulum’s administration, are aimed at addressing housing shortages for health workers and expanding access to modern learning facilities.
The nursing quarters, located adjacent to the State Specialist Hospital, comprise eight blocks of six flats each. The units are fully furnished and equipped with air-conditioning systems to provide improved living conditions for healthcare personnel.
In the education sector, the First Lady also commissioned the Aliyakeri and Abbaganaram Mega Primary Schools. Each facility consists of 48 classrooms with the capacity to accommodate thousands of pupils and is equipped with ICT centres, e-learning systems, modern sports facilities, and solar-powered electricity to support uninterrupted learning.
According to a statement by Dauda Iliya, spokesperson to the Borno State Governor, the projects reflect ongoing efforts to strengthen both the health and education sectors in the state.
Speaking at the event, Senator Tinubu commended Governor Zulum for his people-centred approach to governance, noting that the initiatives would enhance healthcare delivery and improve the quality of education.
“You have done very well. I am privileged to be here at the commissioning today. What we have seen so far in Borno is quite encouraging,” she said.
The governor’s administration has so far completed 104 mega schools, with several others at different stages of construction across the state’s 27 local government areas.
The First Lady also launched a N200 million empowerment programme targeting 2,000 vulnerable women across the state. Each beneficiary is to receive a grant of N100,000 and a sewing machine to support their livelihoods.
She further praised the initiative, describing it as a demonstration of the governor’s commitment to improving the welfare of the people.
A breakdown of the beneficiaries shows that 400 women were selected from Maiduguri metropolis, 200 from Jere Local Government Area, 100 from Biu, while the remaining 24 local government areas have 50 beneficiaries each.
In addition, Senator Tinubu presented keys to brand-new utility vehicles to eight outstanding teachers, principals, TVET coordinators, and staff of the Borno State Ministry of Education in recognition of their dedication to duty.
In a related development, Governor Zulum presented a house to a ministry watchman, Baba Modu Fandi, in appreciation of his service, while the First Lady supported him with an additional sum of N2 million.
