ABUJA, NIGERIA (NPA) — March 21, 2026 — Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation has assured citizens that security agencies are working around the clock to protect lives and property, while taking sustained steps to strengthen national security.
In a statement by Rabiu Ibrahim, Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister, Mohammed Idris gave the assurance in an interview with the BBC’s Victoria Uwonkunda, published on YouTube, where he addressed the intelligence services’ role following recent attacks, including the Maiduguri incident.
Idris rejected claims of failure by security agencies, saying, “I don’t think they failed. More work needs to be done. Nigerian security agencies are working around the clock to ensure this does not happen again,” noting that Maiduguri has seen significant improvements in peace and stability.
He added that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reform agenda is focused on safety and preventing future attacks. On global tensions, Idris stressed Nigeria’s readiness to support energy security: “Nigeria is ever ready to contribute to energy security around the world. Whatever Nigeria can do to ease tension, it will do.”
Speaking on Tinubu’s visit to the UK, Idris described it as vital for strengthening historical, cultural, and economic ties. He highlighted reforms already improving Nigeria’s global standing, saying the President’s invitation reflects a positive international reception.
The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustaining reforms, bolstering security, and positioning Nigeria as a reliable global partner.
