Tinubu receives NCSU Shield Award at 114th anniversary

ABUJA, Nigeria (NPA) — The Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU) has conferred its Shield Award on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in recognition of his administration’s commitment to the welfare of Nigerian workers.

The award was presented on Monday as part of activities marking the union’s 114th anniversary and was received on behalf of the President by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Olorogun Festus Keyamo (SAN), at Merit House, Abuja.

According to a statement by Tunde Moshood, Special Adviser on Media and Communication to the Minister, the Shield Award is the NCSU’s highest honour and is reserved for individuals recognised for exceptional service and commitment to the advancement of Nigerian workers.

The award was presented by the union’s leadership, led by its National President, Comrade Oluwole Sunday. He was accompanied by the immediate past President, Comrade Lawrence Ameachi, who also served as Chairman of the Occasion; Chairman of the Federal Council, Comrade Adoga Gupada; and Assistant General Secretary, Comrade Yildet Bigwan.

In conferring the honour, Sunday described Tinubu as a “true shield of the Nigerian worker”, saying the President’s policies had consistently prioritised the interests of the labour force.

The union said the President’s interventions had helped raise morale within the civil service and demonstrated concern for the welfare of workers across the country.

The NCSU, which has 84 affiliates, is described in the statement as Nigeria’s oldest trade union, with a history spanning more than a century and predating the country’s independence. The union is also credited with confronting British colonial authorities in defence of Nigerian workers.

Keyamo, who received the award on Tinubu’s behalf, expressed appreciation for the recognition from the union, which he described as Nigeria’s oldest trade union.

The Minister, who was also recognised by the NCSU for his continued solidarity with Nigerian workers, used the occasion to highlight what he described as Tinubu’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare.
